My problem isn't with the tiger, it's with whoever on the vet staff decided to quit loading him up. Their story is BS and no intelligent person buys it.

I know people who work with Mike. They say on gameday, having all these people around makes him nervous. They have to walk him into the cage on a leash. So unless he is super calm and ok, they don't even chance it. Because they said if Mike doesn't want to go, he won't go. Tiger's have the strength of like 8 men. He calls the shots.
And on days when he did get in the cage, they sedate him. That's why if you look at him before the game, he is drooling like crazy. So stop with all the "GET MIKE IN THE DAMN CAGE YOU BUMS!!" Mike calls the shots and they respect his decision either way.

Edit: I think we should let this poster walk a nervous Mike on a leash and into the cage on gamedays...I bet he'll understand real quick.

Damn right man. They should have used cattle prods, whips, ropes, or maybe starving him for three days before a game then throwing your dumb arse into the trailer to get him in there.

So what you are saying is that this particular tiger was different than the other 5 tigers that LSU previously used as a mascot. Roscoe gets skittish around big crowds while the previous tigers did not? I guess Mike VII has a decent chance of not being afraid to load up in his travel cage.

Unless it's the human trainers who are changing their approach.

Great post. Is that what was done in the 70s? 80s? 90s? 2000s? All the way up to 2014?

I'm pretty certain they weren't whipping and shocking Mike with a cattle prod as recent as the last few years when Mike used to make it to every game.

Dude you are such a tool. You think you know more than every coach at LSU and now you think you know more than the vet school too?

Ah, so here's the real reason for this crappy thread. If he doesn't load into a trailer and enter the stadium on gameday, Mike is essentially pointless in your opinion. For frick's sake...

That I can't answer. I only know people who work with this Mike. Maybe all tigers are different. Some mind it and some don't. I don't know what to tell you. Maybe they sedated Roscoe first and put him after that. So now they give this Mike the option. Could be something to do with appeasing the PETA type groups. But again I don't know what to tell ya.

I didn't start this thread.

And if you think forcing Mike into a travel cage is cruel why are you okay with keeping him caged in a small habitat with no interaction with other tigers? Is that not cruel as well?

I appreciate your contributions to this thread. You are one of the few posters that I have seen (for over a year now) that gives level-headed responses.

That habitat is far from small. He lives better than most people.

I don't get how some people can understand this: He's a tiger. A tiger. He can do whatever he wants to do. If he doesn't want to get in the travel cage, then he won't get in it.

Sort like what any of us do. If you don't want to do it, you don't do it.

His environment, i.e. "home" for the last 8 years is that habitat. If he likes being it and feeling secure and comfortable, then so be it.

You're at the game with your snuck in flask watching the game or whatever the case may be (not a shot at you personally), what do you care what he's doing?

Agreed let this Mike rest up in a zoo. Seriously we need a Tiger with more piss and vinegar. One who's not afraid to go into the trailer.

That will never happen. Moving Mike to a zoo would worsen his living conditions. You may not understand it, but LSU cares about the tiger much more than you do.

This will probably happen before he passes, but definitely not now. I visited him this afternoon after hearing the news and he was business as usual. The head vet made it clear he isn't in pain and their treatment should buy us another full football season with our Sixth.

I don't find it necessary hat he attend the games, especially if it means sedating him. Having a habitat with a frickin tiger is still pretty sweet. Why does he have to be a the games?

It's waaaaaaay smaller than the area a normal tiger would roam in his lifetime.

I bet if he could tell you, he doesn't want to walk circles around his habitat all his life either. Why keep him fenced in?

I don't want to go to the dentist, but I do it. I don't want to pay my house note, but I do it. Life ain't about being perfectly comfortable at all times, for humans or animals.

He gets fed ground meat in the shape of Sombraroes, I'm not sure his life can get much easier.
