Barron and the Bama safeties are definitely overrated a tad, but not as much as some like to think. Neither is as good as Landry was at LSU, but both are very good players that greatly benefit from the pass rush their front 7 gets on opposing QBs.

That said, they get pub because they are on Bama's defense. LSU's are just as good in my opinion, especially Taylor in coverage.

Barron is a great safety though (even if he's overhyped), and is a balanced safety that can play against the run and the pass.

He is good against the Run - I haven't seen him display any great pass coverage skills.

According to Kirby Smart and Donta Hightower on SportsCenter today, he is the best player on their entire defense.

The rest of their defense is overrated, but not Mark Barron. Lester is overrated. He had a few interceptions last year and now they think he is a first round pick.

Barron is def overrated. Anyone who has watched football in the past two years knows this. He was routinely beaten in coverage in the second half of last year. Randle owned him and Emory Blake especially owned him in that thrilling Auburn comeback last year (I believe that was the play that Barron got injured).

He is a guy we can exploit if we get one on one with him.

All the mock drafts I have seen Barron goes in 3rd or later. I'm assuming due to this lack if top end speed.

That was last year. He has graded out as the top player on a great Bama defense.
I just find it hard to believe that the best player on a great D is overrated when he doesn't get much hype in the first place.

Where do you access these grades?

The bottom line is Barron is still reaping rewards for his Soph season, similar to Robert Lester. Lester who had a great year last year is easily the weak link on their defense this year.

It was on SportsCenter yesterday. They asked Hightower and Kirby Smart about the "War Wall" or whatever the hell it was so they explained it, and they asked Donta where he ranked. He said he is #2 and climbing. He said Barron has been #1 all year and Hightower and Upshaw have been 2 and 3.

I think anyone who says bama or any bama player is overhyped is just stupid. Baron is really good.

This is one of the more retarded posts I've seen here. It's like saying Laron Landry is overrated.

Come on.

Taylor Mays was either the 2nd or 3rd safety taken in the draft and he was an All American also. Does not have anything to do with the fact that the guy is suited to stop the run and when the others players around him are not getting pressure, he struggles in the passing game. Both were/are great players but are aided by the players around them that mask their weaknesses which when they get to the NFL hurts them.

You comparing Barron to Mays is dumb. Barron is a much, much more sound player than Mays. I'm not surprised though, all of you said the same thing about Julio when he dropped a few passes in '09.

You must admit Julio matured each year and by the time he was a senior he was a damn beast. Looks even more so now with the Falcons. What do you expect on an LSU board though?

Calling Brandon Taylor overrated is about the stupidest thing I've seen on this board.

Saban has had several players from his secondaries go on to not live up to their billing. I think Barron will be a solid NFL player about 3 years after he gets into the league and settles down with a team, but I very much doubt he will be a star or a bust.

I can definitely see DPeterson abusing Barron with speed over the middle

If they would throw to the TE, DP would run circles around the LBs.

I agree. Barron is a very solid player, and hits like a ton of bricks. Between him and Kirkpatrick, I'd take Barron first. Different positions, I know, but IMO Barron is the better player.

I think Dre is overrated...

I think Barron is a pretty decent player, but I think the OP should replace his name with Dre K.

He is a bit overhyped. Good in run support because he's a good open field tackler, but his coverage skills are average. He would make a good cover two corner at the next level or may be better at safety.

I would have no issues with the Saints drafting Barron. Slightly overhyped, IMO, but an extremely solid player and a future NFL starter. He could step in for Roman Harper on day 1.. replace one run stopping Bama safety with another.
