I dont think Mauck was very impressive against OK.

He made one bad throw. However under that kind of pressure, you can live with one. He was playing against the #1 defense in America(coming into the game; LSU actually passed them by the end of the contest)and he made fewer mistakes than the Heisman trophy winner on the other sideline. Nuff said.

Mauck had 0 TDs and 2 INTs vs. Oklahoma. Thank God for our defense, Justin Vincent, and that sweep play to Green. Those are the reasons we beat OU.

Mauck wasnt terrible agaisnt OK, but he didnt perform like a surgeon. The offense as a whole struggled that night so it isnt all his fault of course.

let's not forget the auburn loss is Jimbo & the refs fault
+1 re: the refs, -1 re: Jimbo.

JR is probably the best QB to ever play for LSU (and I am a huge Hodson fan; but JR's performances speak for themselves). His lack of Championships are a result of unfortunate timing (peaking in an even-numbered year when Auburn & Florida were both strong) and bad luck (Katrina/Rita). Had his chronology been one year in either direction, he probably would have won a championship in either '04 or '07, and had the hurricanes not come he probably would have won one in '05.

Neither had the Moxie of JR.
Disagree, especially as regards Mauck. Upon what do you base your measurement of his and Flynn's moxie, btw?

Neither were as smart as JR.
I highly doubt that any of us will ever be in a postition to offer an informed opinion on that.

Sure, they were athletic, but they couldn't lead.
That is a bizarrely unsupportable claim to make. They both led teams to National Championships, and none of us really know what happened in the lockerrooms, huddles and practice fields in all three of those years. So none of us can really make that judgment.

Russell threw for 269 yards vs. Auburn. He had a good day, and we moved the ball all we wanted between the 30s. But it was Jimbo's conservative play-calling in Auburn territory that cost us that game.

But we probably wouldn't have even gotten in the title game in 2005 because USC and Texas were in a league of their own that year.

Flynn loses to Auburn and UF on the road in 06, and Russell beats Auburn and UF at home in 07.

I don't know why y'all waste so much energy on this shite.

Marino was " talented" but he would switch with Elway and Montana any day of the week.
They got it done, he didn't
So if Elway had retired after '96, he wouldn't have been as good as Marino? But now he's among the Montana-elite?

Judging any individual player by team accomplishments is a clumsy and inaccurate exercise. Darrel Mitchell has more NCAA Tourney wins than Chris Jackson and Pete Maravich combined; that doesn't make him a better guard than either.

That would be a danger. But this was one year after undefeated Auburn had been left out and Oklahoma from the Big XII was embarassed in the Title game. Plus, this was just two years removed from the LSU/SC split title of '03. I think there is a good chance that an undefeated LSU team from the SEC would have found its way into the Championship Game against SC ahead of an undefeated Texas team from the Big XII.

Yeah...thankfully Flynn was able to QB PITT over WVU...otherwise our 2 loss team would have been a huge disappotinment, what with going into the season finale #1 and then tanking against ARKY.

Wait...

JL will be a very good leader for us because he was cool under pressure (fans boo and stuff like that)

Is your birth date on your user profile for real... 1920? It has a bearing on my response.

No we don't. We just boo you because it's idiotic to say he was cool under pressure.

That was NationalChampionshipLSU's quote... I was replying to it... If he's not really 88 years old... tear him a new one.

I knew I read that somewhere before... I thought that was just you repeating yourself from earlier.

Why didn't you quote that?

My bad... I thought I did but then I had to log on... Anyway, your reply was way more kind than mine would have been. Nonetheless, if we have an 88 year old fella on this site, I'm going to use restraint.

Maybe we could have all saved some time had he just said they were his favorite QBs. No insult to Mauch or Flynn who played key roles in the NCs, but those were NC teams with great defenses, good RBs, good OL, etc. There are several QBs that were better (JR, Bert Jones, YA Title, Tommy Hodson, Rohan Davey, maybe even Herb Tyler) but didn't play on teams that were as good. My personal favorite is Rohan, who was a great team leader.

I bet if you check the board circa 2003/2007 you would find a shetload of respect and compliments.

I LOVE what they did here. I'll never forget it. We just have more relevant stuff going on. IMHO.
