Hate to break it to you but Michigan is not a step down. They're the winningest program in college football history and are one of the premier programs in the game. LSU has enjoyed recent success, more than Michigan but I'd consider Michigan on the same level if not a step above LSU. I love LSU but that's just my two cents...
when your ex-coach is still in control then you have a problem

Another reason he would leave is all the negativism our fanbase has poured on him these last few years. It is amazing that the winningest coach in the history of our program, a great recruiter, a good coach and an outstanding person would get such. Negatigers are short sighted malcontents who have no idea how bad things could get without someone the caliber of Les Miles at the reins.

CLM is going to talk to them in person to "help them find a coach" as the media will hear. Behind closed doors, he will politely decline the offer as he has way to much going for him in Louisiana with possible NC next year. You don't disrespect your alma mater by denying them publically.

That may have been the case in the PAST, but it's the now that counts. The SEC and LSU are better programs NOW. That wasn't the case years ago, but it is the case now. Just my two cents...

He visits with Michigan as a courtesy for obvious love of school & program. Doesn't burn any bridges, etc. Recommends a few other coaches for them to pursue.
This, and I think he probably recommends Houston Nutt for the job just to get him out of the SEC!!

Both the media and his own fanbase were critical of him for more than 2 yrs - and questioned his every move....

That could be THE KEY, right there.
The cooler climate allows those northern states to grow fescue and bluegrass... stays green in the winter... yum, yum!
There's something MONEY CAN'T BUY!!

Les may be crazy, but he's not stupid. Les is still a Tiger at the end of the day.
