You are absolutely correct, the issue is the admin. Casual fans will not recognize it but fans who are crazy enough to post on message boards fully understand it, cope and hope for change.

You are also correct, ND cannot win a title without a generation QB. That is probably true for every team in the country outside of a few, LSU being one of them.

For now, Freeman can recruit. He has to work on this coaching thing, work with alums regarding NIL and push for change with the admin. NIL and admin are outside of his control, to an extent, and are irrelevant if he can't do a better job coaching. SO for now, he needs to focus on what he can control - do a better job on Saturdays.

We ended up losing Elston to Michigan, who was our best position coach IMO. I have no idea why he chose Michigan over LSU. Maybe he didn't have a choice? LSU pisses freak shows on the dline and it's just crazy to me that he didn't go with Kelly to develop these types of players.

Rees has been a total disaster. Most ND fans wanted to ship him to Baton Rouge. I recognized the fact that he was young and unproven but thought he would do better than he's done so far. LSU has the luxury of an admin wiling to pay a premium for a proven OC. ND is not willing to commit resources to a proven OC so I thought Rees was the best option at the time.

Everyone in the media rides Freeman's dick, including ND fans. Outside of Fickell, he was the best option for ND. I think Fickell would have been the hire if he would have been willing to leave his cincy team before they played bama.

ND was in a tough spot. They would have lost the locker room and a ton of recruits if they would have waited for Fickell, and I'm not sure they would have even had a staff to coach the bowl game last year. If Freeman wasn't hired by ND, they would have had most of the staff leave before the bowl game.

Short answer - most ND fans now recognize the problems we will/may have with Freeman. Most are still on board but they want Rees gone and a big time OC hire. I doubt ND pulls it off.

Freeman was a terrible hire.

Hiring a young guy because you thought he could recruit is the epitome of total incompetence.

Freeman should be a decent coach in a few years if given the time to develop, but he is a rookie learning on the go.

I hate his offense. It is antediluvian imo. It's a passing game to WRs that wins in CFB today. They change personnel so often that the defense can substitute ad lib. Keeping the same players on the field gives the least amount of information to the defense and limits the ability to substitute. The offense need a major overhaul, but I suspect that Kelly has too much of an ego to change.

The Freeman hire was so shortsighted. The fear was losing the recruiting class (and maybe a few assistants). They also made the mistake of giving the players too much of a voice. LSU did this years ago with Archer. Helped in the immediate short term, but turned out to be a bad hire. Time will tell on Freeman, but you don't make a hire based on ONE recruiting class- or because some 19 and 20 yr olds wanted him.

ND fans are butthurt over the way he left, and I understand that to some extent. I really just don't care that much.
Kelly brought ND out of the depths of college football hell, and that is more important to me than the manner in which he left.

You're not necessarily wrong here. I wouldn't let the players or recruiting classes hold me hostage but it was more than just one recruiting class.

Rumors were that they would have lost about a dozen players to transfer or NFL if they didn't hire Freeman and dozens of recruits from two recruiting classes. Who knows what would have happened if they went another direction but the threat of losing 30 players would have set the program back a decade.

The real question is what would have been gained in exchange? The truth is, I have serious doubts ND would have made an impactful hire if they didn't hire Freeman. The issue at ND, as another post pointed out, is the admin. What was the alternative to Freeman? Was it Fickell or was it some mediocre hire that would have been totally uninspiring? My guess is we would have lost a ton of recruits in exchange for a mediocre coach, i.e, Matt Campbell, and that is far worse than firing Freeman after four years and starting over.

I think LSU would be crazy not to upgrade the offensive staff asap. I really don't know but I think Kelly's options were limited when he took the job and he just went with someone he knew (I could be wrong here).

Kelly has ego for days but let's be honest, any coach worth a shite has an ego. He made some serious changes at ND when he had to make changes. They were a little late, IMO, but better late then never.

This is simply untrue. When it was clear he was staying at ND, ND fans were ecstatic. Everything I saw from ND fans talked about how good he was, how he was finally going to be out from under Kelly’s shadow, and how Kelly failed to steal him.

The fact that he has turned out to be a catastrophic failure without Kelly is icing on the cake.

They weren't. You sacrafice 1 recruiting class and season to get Fickell. Wait it out. The season wouldn't have turned out worse than it is now. On top of that future recruiting classes are all hypothetical until they sign. I bet those classes are going to get nuked after this season anyways or at least have high turnover.

I saw more ND fans coming at it from a "No one like BK, that's why Rees is staying" angle more than he is a great coach.

I'm sure Twitter fans were celebrating but a large faction of the fan base on message boards wanted him gone before Kelly even left for LSU.

I really don't blame Rees entirely and still believe there's a chance he turns into a good OC/coach. Lost his QB and most experienced receiver and I'm not sure if there's a OC in America that can draw up a good game plan for a QB that should be playing DII ball.

Heist, overall 2022 has been a promising season, but by far the biggest disappointment of year 1 with Kelly has been special teams. It has been inexcusably bad. What are your thoughts on Polian, and would Kelly fire an assistant after year 1?

There was quite a bit of this going on. I'm sure some guys on the staff were not fond of BK. Newsflash - sometimes people don't get along with their boss.

That wasn't the case with Rees. He respected Kelly and stayed at ND for other reasons. He did a podcast with someone after their bowl game and was fairly open about what happened behind the scenes after Kelly took the LSU job. It was very obvious that he was surprised by the move but had nothing bad to say about Kelly, and the interviewer did his best to get Rees to throw kelly under the bus.
