Old money probably wants Fickell and want nothing to do with hiring freeman b/c he has no HC experience. When holtz left ND, they promoted the d coordinator - Bob Davie. I dont have to tell you how that worked out. After that debacle, there was basically an unwritten rule that nobody is allowed to coach there without experience.

Most of the people around the team and within admin are convinced freeman has "it" what that may be. THey could be right, they could be wrong. I guess we'll see.

Players love both Freeman and Rees but I think Rees is not being discussed. He's 29. His time will come if he does well.

Saw some discussion on Twitter that people were clamoring for Freeman as HC and Rees to stay as OC. That seemed like a really green staff to me. I think I read this is only Rees' second season as an OC. Combine that with Freeman's zero years of HC experience and that combo would frighten the crap out of me.

I think what's going on here is that Freeman knows the interim label kills his leverage to be a permanent replacement. He knows he has momentum right now and any delay or search would lessen his negotiating leverage. I think they tried to give him the title and he said thanks but no thanks. I want the job or I'm out.

He has a LSU offer right now, OSU would take him in a heartbeat and if Fickell leaves he's a lock for that job.

Would be the smart play on Freeman's part, and it kinda makes sense.

Confirmed that you did not get our strenght which doesn't surprise me and it's great for us b/c he's good and said he's going to die on the job.

Tommy got a big offer from you but wants to stay at ND and looks like they are going to match his salary. Given that tommy is going to stay, it seems likely freeman will be named coach. I don't know how attractive the job would be to a big name coach if the AD is picking your o coordinator, right? Makes sense to me.

If freeman stays, Mickens will stay but I doubt you need help in the secondary.

Elston will be the tricky one.

What are you guys hearing on your end?

Wasn’t ND Weis’s first HC job?

Totally agree but I really don't see the alternatives as being any better.

If we wait, we lose Freeman. Lose freeman, we lose a lot of recruits and current players, unless we can get someone in the locker room immediately to calm their nerves. That rules fickell out.

We can hire Campbell right now, lose Freeman and let the chips fall where they may. I dont like that option b/c Campbell is a high floor, low ceiling guy. I dont want that. I'll take the low floor for a high ceiling right now.

I think that's exactly why many of your fans don't like Kelly - does he have a ceiling? I really dont know. I don't think he has a ceiling but can't say for sure he'll win one either.

Cambpell has a ceiling to me. I have no good reason for this belief. It's just a gut instinct.

Really good point and illustrates the kind of stupidity we're working with. We knew nothing about how WEis would recruit or perform as a coach in college, had no first hand knowledge of his work product but we can hire him without experience b/c he's nfl guy and a good notre dame boy.

Freeman is on campus and everyone who works with him believes he's the guy and HC experience is all the sudden a deal breaker.

lol.

What about mullen? Is it true he just flat out wont recruit? The guy had some decent offenses at Miss state and florida, right?

I wouldn't touch him if he didnt want to recruit but he has some experience.

DC too. You guys swiped aranda from wiscy years ago - why not go after jim leonard now?

Damn. I really hoped we could pull Balis.

In any case, I think Moffit needs to be put out pasture. Didn’t you say Balis’s assistant was good?

I don't see kelly hiring mullen.

I could see mullen taking a year off or going to the nfl.

Doubt Leonard is leaving his alma mater. I trust Kelly will make a good DC hire but I know if it were me, one of my first calls would be Jimmy Lake.

Mullen is intriguing but the recruiting thing is a big issue. I also can’t see Kelly hiring an OC that will run a completely different offense than his own.

It was interesting. Last night, someone had a twitter space open with thousands of listeners. Ton of players, former players and recruits were on the line. This was right after the story was confirmed.

Nobody said a bad word about kelly. All the players were really appreciative of him and were disappointed but not mad at him. Someone asked them who they want to keep on staff and basically everyone said Balis and his assistant is a must. I was a little surprised how much they emphasized his importance to the program. I think you are getting his assistant who is supposed to be great.

Rees and Freeman were both mentioned. They are well liked and Freeman is considered to be a natural leader. Keep in mind these guys have been with him for less than a year, and he replaced a coach lea who absolutely loved by his players. I feel bad for that guy at vandy. Maybe kelly can get him to lsu and save him. Anway, Freeman won over a tough room within a brief period of time.

Notre Dame's version of shite posting is better than 99% of the legitimate posting that happens on this board.

I totally disagree with your opinion on Campbell, btw. But I've beaten that drum enough in our own coaching search to rehash my feelings again.

Good luck in your search and thanks for the info on Kelly.

Jimmy Lake is an absolute sleazeball. Would probably be a great hire for recruiting.

Probably right about leonard. My buddy's kids play hockey with his kids and he's a wiscy guy through and through. Imagine what that guy could do with your talent, though. He has to think about that too, right?

What's the deal with Aranda? He gives me a serial killer vibe but he is a winner. I was definitely thinking you would make a move to pull him out of baylor, and I thought that would be a smart hire if he brought that O coordinator with him. Were you guys not interested or was he not interested?

I know nothing about Lake other than he’s one hell of a DC.

Leonard would absolutely kill it with our talent. I’d take him in a heartbeat but just can’t see him leaving.

Aranda’s fault is likely the lack of HC experience. Whether or not for the best, it’s clear SW targets experienced coaches with a history of sustained success. I won’t pretend to have any inside knowledge though.
