They can't even recruit 40-50 returning members to take the trip for UO?

I bet the tuition at UO is more reasonable than at LSU since they can make responsible decisions not to spend money needlessly.
Doesn't the athletic department pays for the band trips, not the music department?

They should put the fight song and other music on videotape and play on the giant screen in Jerry's House. Same affect.
You're joking, right? That's just stupid.

But being on quarters helps the football team more. With school not in session the football team and coaches can be together for 40 hrs a week, correct? When school is in session they can onl be together 20hrs a week?
LSU starts classes the 21st so Les and the team can only spend 20 hrs a week together while Chip and the team can spend 40?
regardless of the exact hours, its a tremendous advantage for Oregon. so... they just sit around learning the play book and resting until the next practice?
But... I really hated quarters, the one time I was on quarters in grad school at Southern Illinois. the books and profs were all oriented to semesters and they just crammed the same material into 1/3 less time.
Horrible.

Somebody needs to explain the concept of a budget to you because you obviously don't get it.
I'll give it a stab. Every department is given a budget. On a game of this magnitude on primetime tv (ABC at 7 PM CDT) - it would be smart for Oregon to spend the money that was already budgeted out to them to at least send a pep band.
If they don't spend the money, they don't get as big a budget next year because the bean counters will say "well if they got by with x amount of dollars, then that's what they can get by with this year".

Think about the financial implications. The band is home for the summer. They don't report to school for three more weeks after this game. So the U of O would have to fly all of these band members on individual flights from all over the country to get to this game. It just doesn't make sense. Not to mention they won't have practiced together. There's probably some NCAA rules wrapped up in there somehwere.

this is huge for them to not have their band there. It is a home game for us even more so now. It dont know what LSU would do without the band there for pregame and the cheers during the game.

Hey guys, what you don't get is that you have a awesome band. We do not. Dont get me wrong, I like our band and all, but our Band is hardly the thing I think of when I think of UO Football. LSU, Tenn, AU, tOSU and a few others are all known to have big time bands. Your band plays all these songs and is really large. Our band is very, very small and not even close to yours. Our band just plays only 1-3 songs the whole game besides pregame or halftime. And I have indeed heard some good tunes from them in that. However, it really is wimpy compared to yours. I have seen USC bring their travel band and USC's you could hear over ours. I like USC's btw. Anyways, UO's Football identity has nothing to do with our band whatsoever. Our cheerleaders maybe yes, but band, nope. Most bands in the PAC are a joke compared to the SEC ones. And the only school I could see who would just demand their band go with them is USC. That team and players feed off theirs. We do not. Does this make sense? Translation: We have a small arse tiny weak band compared to you. We could care less if they were there or not. They did not come vs Tennessee and did it hurt us any? Nope!

Most bands in the Pac-10 don't travel....unless it's a rival game. USC may send 10 guys but not the full band. The Oregon band sucks and no one out here cares about our band. Our cheerleaders will be there. Keep in mind Oregon doesn't start school til the last week of September so band members aren't even in Eugene. The band will not help Oregon win or lose either way. This will be an away game for us we know that but the band wouldn't help Oregon at all. It would actually embarrass the Ducks.

I only read the first page, so I don't know if it's been stated, but two years ago LSU announced that our band was not going to the season opener at Washington. Well, LSU fans ponied up and money donations came in from all over to at least get the pep band there.
We love the atmosphere of LSU football, and the band is a big part of that.
So basically, we get the pregame field all to ourselves!!!

Any former band members know if there were any NCAA rules involved regarding the band? Cheer is a club now so I don't think it is under the same scrutiny.

plus, lets get real... piccolos shouldn't even be in tiger band.
Oh I know you didn't go there!
Seriously though, wasn't the band supposed to not be attending the Washington game and the fans had a meltdown over it? And somehow they found some money to bring the pepband. I think we fired some teachers so the pepband could be at the game

I am disappointed at that news. I think its' more interesting and could make it more like a bowl game if both full bands were there.

I really liked quarters. I liked only having 3-4 classes at a time. The classes that I hate end in 10 weeks. No homework over Spring Break....

My only question is that since oregon isnt bringing their band, will the golden band from tigerland still be allowed to play pregame before the game on the field? Or.will that not be considered fair? Im gonna be livid if they dont get to, just because uo didnt make the effort to bring one.

Just researched tuition for UO and it is almost $1,000.00 per semester less per full time student taking 12 hours (basic) than LSU. enrollment is about 19,500 and GPA for admission is 3.4!
Band has a budget to educate the music students, not to waste on athletic events away from campus. They have a budget to educate the music students and are probably satisfied with their budget.
Did UO make it to the BCS without the band going to all of the away games last year? Seems like their football team plays pretty well without the band. Just a thought.
I think their priorities are in the right place.
