Charlie Pallilo on Sports 790 here in Houston did a mythical playoff or matchup of SEC versus Big 12 teams today. He matched the top six from each conference and worked up to the top ending with Oklahoma versus LSU. Houston radio gives quite a bit of love to the Tigers with Les Miles calling in each Thursday morning on 1590.

have relatives and friends from Alabama (some Bama fans and some Auburn fans) and my take is that they still don't have any respect for Miles as a coach.

I have yet to meet an Auburn or Bama fan that will even acknowledge that Miles is even a competant coach, let along admit he is great.

Been a fan long? This was posted before, to a USC fan, forgot who to give credit to but loved it:

quote:

Last time you guys were "a consistent top 5 team in the hunt year after year" was back in the 70's, when y'all finished in the Top 10 six times. We weren't too shabby in the 70's ourselves, finishing #7, #11, #11, and #13 (in fact, USC played us in the 70's and only barely beat us at the last minute 17-12).

Y'all did alright in the 80's (finishing #7, #8, #10, #11, #14, #15, #18, which is pretty much the same thing we did in the 80's (finishing #5, #10, #11, #15, #19, #20). We played USC in the 80's as well, and beat y'all 23-3.

In the 90's, y'all finished #20 in 1990 and #23 in 1992, #13 in 1994 and #12 in 1995. As for LSU, we finished #12 in 1996 and #13 in 1997.

In the 2000's, like I explained above, Carroll brought y'all back to an elite program, same time Saban brought us back to an elite program.

Now, after refreshing you on history, do you still think your quote here applies to LSU fans any more than it does to USC fans:

I know a lot of people in Atlanta (GT fans) who like LSU and think they're good, and hope that whenever they play UGA they'll beat the living snot out of the DAWGS
I've even "turned" some of my GT friends into Tiger fans! The Dawg fans, however are another story. I don't think they respect our program, and they hate Les.

For the most part the people I run into around the country know and respect LSU and watch them when they are on TV. I even have people I know in California and New York texting me when LSU is winning and saying congrats.

I think alot of the guys that are stuck in La. as fans don't have a good perspective on where the program is and are still suffering from beaten wife syndrome acquired during the mid 90's.

If I asked some guy, "What are the best college football programs of all time?" he would say:

"Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma, and Nebraska."

I think we need to win just one more National Championship to be classed with those guys in a historical view. BUT, we ARE the best program of this decade!

i think overall there is a general lack of knowledge for the history of our program

and they completely glance over where we rank in all-time wins and have no clue exactly how high we stand, in fact i think a lot of LSU fans dont even know

I do believe we are arguably the best program of the decade. As of today, we have more wins, a better winning %, and more BCS titles than USC. AND our conference winning % is almost as good as USC's even though the SEC is tougher.

You'll find generally positive support and recognition for our football program when you go around the country. Honestly, we have pockets of bandwagon fans in many places; from Vermont to Washington. Not something most of us would expect.

But(in my experience) the lack of respect for our program around the southeast is amazing. Florida/Georgia/Alabama, more specifically. Tennessee is a slight exception, oddly enough. I suspect our recent success against UF/Bama has something to do with that.

I work with a bunch of Pac10 and Big10 fans and they have a lot of respect for LSU.

LSU = Elite.

I hope nobody gives us any respect. That way they will feel like crap when we beat them. I want people to come to the realization in 2009 that "Hey what the heck LSU has three BSC championships and nobody else has more than one... how did that happen..... is that right?"

You know, that is typical of a USC fan who has a habit of having things handed to him. Raving about USC and its Harry High School Schedule is about as meaningfull as the accalades to your so called gods.

Beating Auburn at AU was a huge step in the "regional respect" column putting everyone on notice since LSU hadn't done that since DiNardo. Even Saban couldn't get it done. I was there, and it was a sight to see. AU fans were stunned but respectful to me and the other LSU fans around me in defeat. I think the next step is to beat Urban Meyer's club on the road in Gainesville. Especially, this will garner respect for Miles who is often regarded as an inferior coach to Meyer. As an aside, Miles is viewed as reckless by his detractors, (and one day LSU will likely lose a game because he calls a play that outsiders see as a gamble), BUT if you objectively look at the percentage of these types of plays he converts versus his peers in the biz, you can only conclude that he and his coaches have a system that works in deciding how to take calculated risks (either that or the man has a 10 pound Shamrock permanently embedded up his ARSE).
As for the respect of the rest of the nation. It's nice to have....but who really gives a crap? The SEC in King in football and produces the most NFL prospects. The SEC championship is a first class, real championship decided on the field. It was the first of it's kind. It is always a sellout way in advance (not like that ACC joke). The product of that game is more often than not a true Title Contender.

I wonder what the program looks like to outsiders, too, out of curiosity. Like another layer of LSU-ness. Everyone has a mirror in their home, right?

LSU's current state of national attention mainly has to do with the media's coverage, who are driven by market forces (duh?) Go up the chain...content -> reporter -> editor -> manager -> CEO -> shareholder -> profit. There's roughly the same population in the Los Angeles metro as Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi combined. Therefore, media loves USC.

The future of college powerhouses will NOT look like the past. Guys go to USC for the beach/babes/Hollywood and that will continue to draw. Miami, same thing, I expect them to come back. But who the hell wants to spend 5 years in Lincoln, NE? It's cold there and Osbourne's almost dead. A lot of programs have gone the way of the 200 pound lineman.

LSU recruits and maintains the best type of players: guys that want to stay near home and play with mama and daddy being able to drive to the game. These kids have family values and Miles kicking RP to the curb can only help. Throw in some national 4 stars and the I-10 corridor and I don't see this changing anytime soon.

To the future: a few years from now, when LSU has corralled it's next championship, we will be looked at for what we are: the best team of the modern (read BCS) era. Add that to the fact that we play UF and Bama (at least one NC before Saban bolts for $8M/yr somewhere) every year and the legitimacy will continue to rise. It just takes a little time for history to come into focus.

LSU will just continue to do what it does: bring in quality players and bring it on the field for the Tiger faithful. Daddy Les will keep it together. We don't need the AP or ESPN, but I'll make you this promise for those really concerned about it:

They'll be back.

I think people feel our success is Saban-fed and episodic, and that we are lucky.

The luck part is correct, as it is for any team in any championshio. You have to be very good and very fortunate to win a championship. The ball literally has to bounce your way more times to allow your talent and strengths to be capitlized.

The Saban-fed is only partly true, since Miles has actually out-recruited (average stars on rivals) Saban over their respepcted reigns at LSU.

You cannot honestly say we are on par historically with those other programs I named, the college football world says we are not
Only the real 'old-timers' in CFB are concerned with a program that won 40 years ago. Most of the fly by night media are only concerned with what happened yesterday, much less decades ago. Recruits could care less what ND did in 1970. They are looking to the future, and so should we, while remembering we have been the best team of this decade, and have had winning traditions almost every decade since the 50's.

Yes, there have been some bad years...but the entire body of work of LSU (I think something like a .700 winning percentage or at least that at Tiger Stadium over the entire history of LSU football) to me says winner.

the Tigers are one of the most respected teams in the country and have been for may years even years when we didn't do so good. They have a great national fan base and believe me. NO tean looks forward to playing LSU...especially on a Saturday night in the best college venue in the country bar none.

Overall, LSU is regarded as a jock factory party school with average academics and a better than average looking student body which is socially dominated by Greek organizations.
All due respect to your Pa, but that is not the case at all in my experience.

It's interesting how an athletic program can influence general opinions about a university or even a state. LSU athletes are respected for their on-the-field behavior. No showboating. They don't do a lot of trash talking. Les doesn't do a bunch of screaming, or ranting and raving. Players are phenomenal athletes who play for team first, appear respectful of opponents and are rock solid under pressure. The Katrina year garnered tons of quiet respect across the nation. LSU teams seem to often capture the best of college athletics.

Contrast that with a school like Miami. Based on its football field representation, many in the country view "The U" as an inner city thug academy. There's no concept communicated by that program of Miami as an elegant and expensive private school located on a beautiful campus in Coral Gables.

Based on personal experience, the view of LSU from the mid-Atlantic region far exceeds US News and World Report ratings. That has changed positively over the past several years. In a general sense it is probably also related to a gradual rise in "peer ratings" and school rank in various publications including US News.

also keep in mind that houston is geographically and culturally closer to louisiana than austin....the I-10 corridor is really a big deal...LSU is closer to home than Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, Auburn, and Texas than anyplace in their own states...and this could very well extend to Florida too
