re: Pat Murphy changes his mind, will not coach softball team

Murphy has embarassed Bama, lsu, and himself. He may think he's done the right thing. however, i don't see things being the same for him at bama. Don't think his administration hasn't taken note, his players, his fans, and his opposing coaches. this will be used against him. i'd be surprised if he has the same success in the years to come.
it's a good thing, this man is obviously not happy in his life and searching for it. he's not happy at bama or he wouldn't be looking for something else.
You don't want someone who doesn't have the same mental focus and stability in their life that created their success. he's had tremendous success, that doesn't mean he will continue to have it.

Without a doubt it was a bush league move. Its just not as big a deal as some here are making it. I doubt if many on this board would care if a history professor from Arizona agreed to teach at LSU and changed his mind immediately thereafter. It would be understandable if, upon further consideration, he decided it wasn't the move he wanted to make at that time.
I tend to agree with this, but there is one glaring difference...this was a "Public" hire with a press conference, press release, meeting of the players, etc, etc. Most hires are "private" in nature and get no publicity and, therefore, go un-noticed.

Something smells with this whole charade. There was a thread yesterday that got whacked when reporting rumors about what happened. Is there anything credible being discussed?

On Saturday I spoke to an acquaintance who is a die-hard Bama fan. He said Bama fans were glad to see Murphy go because he could get them to the national championship, but couldn't win it.
When I spoke to him last night, he was gloating that Murphy was rejecting LSU and returning to Bama.

According to the Birmingham News, y'all have this backwards. Tide is all about class and LSU has none. Birmingham News: Alabama/Mal Moore = Class, LSU/Alleva = No Class
regardless of what side of this issue youre on, id be thoroughly embarrassed to put my name on this piece of "journalism"
I can't fathom justifying what Murphy did as having class. Alleva may have taken a shot, if you want to call that sentence a "shot." Goes down in the books as one of the weakest "shots" taken at a man. not to mention he had every right to put him down after what he did.
Goes to show you the ignorance, stubbornness and classlessness of Bama

Typical Alabama. Kind of sounds like a football coach they have there.

It's embarrassing for him, no doubt. But I can't help but think it hurts LSU a lot; that's what stings for me. You know have to call up your second choice & convince them you really wanted them all along. If it would have been an agreement in principle privately and then a private change of mind, that's one thing. But to have a public press conference where you say the things you said about LSU AND Bama, it stinks.
And that Bham reporter needs to read the transcript of his LSU presser and some of the things he said/implied about Bama and softball on the "back burner" before crowning him with the class crown.

Oh, and not to mention that any prospective coach knows LSU's highest offer which in effect becomes a floor. That POS has really put Alleva in a bind, and I don't blame him for being pissed and saying so publicly.

Because it was Bama and maybe our pride is stung a bit that this is such a big issue here.
But you're right, it was bush league.
Difference is that the history professor didn't have a press conference to announce his leaving Ariz and coming to LSU...............

That is a valid distinction.

Well, as long as it's a coach that's on the same level as Murphy, which it should be.
That's why I think Lisa Fernandez might love this chance. She gets a HC gig at a school that has shown it can compete for the NC, is willing to invest in the program, and she gets a great salary without an head coaching experience. her experience, both as a player and assistant coach, combined with her name recognition, could easily put her in the same salary range as Murphy.
The $64,000 question is - does she want to leave her alma mater and the Pac-10 to coach in the SEC?

It was a joke (I guess a poor one) about the 'egg on face' exchange earlier.

He accepted the job, held a press conference, and met with the team. It's not like he changed his mind the next morning. It was 3 days later.
That's why I have an issue with...but I guess, what's done is done, so we will just have to move on...

He talked about him in his presser, saying there was only one other person who had coached at Bama and LSU and he did pretty well.
That's not all he said.
"What they did was a huge statement to me because nobody does that," Murphy said. "LSU is not putting softball on the back burner."
Murphy was asked if he spoke to Saban about his days at LSU from 2000-04.
"I've never seen him," Murphy said. "He's in like Fort Knox there."

The softball coach has never seen the football coach?
For the "5 minutes" he was here, Les Miles and Nicki Caldwell were at the presser to welcome him. What a different atmosphere! I guess he likes it the way Bama does things.
