I don't feel like reading all 6 pages but
quote:

LSU is having serious problems with Mike VI

Since when do we have problems with him

Peta and whoever else thinks we are doing something bad by having him as our mascot. He gets treated better than any tiger in the wild

At least the author edited the piece after it was pointed out that he was being offensive. I will give him that much:

"E-man,

As far as the threatening letters received from PETA and other AR orgs, that is outrageous and anyone who would make such threats does not understand animal advocacy and is a very unfortunate representative of the cause. What I and other (hopefully more nuanced!) speakers are trying to accomplish is hindered by the people who would want non-animal rights minded people to be forcibly changed. No lasting change is brought about by force, and I do not wish to force anyone to share my beliefs.

Michael,
As you correctly noted, I definitely do not mind responding to criticism in the spirit of discussion, debate, and the betterment of my writing skills! Thanks for the discussion; I truly consider all opposing viewpoints I receive (and I receive quite a bit of them), because in the end I could be wrong after all. I’ve gotta say, though, in this case I’m sticking with my argument here. I suppose my opinion can be boiled down to this: animals should be allowed to live in the manner to which they have evolved as much as possible whenever possible. Also, interesting point about your pharmaceutical job. I also agree humans should be allowed to live in the manner to which we have evolved. Surely we haven’t evolved to sit and type, fill out forms, and watch our dreams recede into the distance as we stay inside the majority of our days! However, you’ve given me a lot to think about, as have all the commenters, and considering opposing views is paramount to being a freethinking human.

It is interesting how much the liberal/conservative debate has sprung up. I always to hope to keep that one out of most animal discussions. Most people are surprised to find out I’m a bit of a stuffy old conservative at heart. Actually, some of the most dedicated animal advocates are very conservative Christians and members of other gigantic organized religions. I think they don’t get all the press the other ones get, but animal advocacy and compassion is not simply a collegiate hobby of the privileged far left.

As for PETA. I do want to stress that “animal rights” in this country does not only mean “PETA.” In fact, though they do some great things, I have publicly written and spoken in opposition to PETA and I’m quite sure I am not their favorite person…at all. I am against anyone with such blindingly fanatic ideas that they are closed to the possibility they just might be wrong…even if I agree with them. Not saying all of PETA does that (always dangerous to generalize), but I’ve met enough members of their org which appeared a little too inflexible for my tastes. I will always believe in the rights of animals and do my small two bits to try to help them according to my current understanding of compassion, but I’m always open to guidance and further refinement of my personal philosophy.

Lsu Alum,
Speaking of generalizations, your comments are appreciated and I realize much of the offense taken from the original article stems from an unclear wording on my part. In the spirit of fair exchange, and to avoid future loss of focus from my main point (supporting the abusive exotic cat trade is disturbing), I have contacted the administrator to edit the portion of the article which appears to apply to all LSU fans (and has caused a good bit of the ire in the conversations). I’m not a fan of tiger captivity (or eagle, for that matter), but LSU is a great institution and I have many a friend who went there or teaches/taught there. I’ll edit the statement to be clearer and to hopefully avoid any ad hominem attacks. I’m cool with that!

Working and hoping for a world in which all animals are free(er), humans included,

Mike"

By the way,

Michael, E-Man, and anyone else on the LSU message board:

I forgot to ask if one of you guys wouldn’t mind posting my response above (marked march 12, 2009 6:20a.m.) on you guys’ board along with this one?

E-Man said “If you attack the LSU community, you should be prepared for the wrath that will ensue. Oh and GEAUX TIGERS!!!!”

Just want you guys to know I have no desire to attack the LSU community! One of my dear friends is a gigantic LSU fan and I do have respect for the school. I know it appeared I was slamming all LSU fans, but hopefully my later posts cleared that up. I still find the support of the exotic cat trade disturbing, but as for any perceived broad attacks on LSU or its fans, I apologize!

Thanks for posting,

Mike"

quote:

As for the rest of your comments. It’s clear to me you are incapable of thinking for yourself but instead regurgitate every lie your stupid parents and ministers have told from the day you came out of your mother’s womb. You are ignorant, misinformed and arrogant. You have no soul, no creativity, no culture and little intellect. You lack all critical thinking skills and are incapable of logic and reason. You, my friend, are the worst kind of American there is. One who knows nothing about their country but a bunch of disgusting lies and half truths. Bless your heart, Michael, your whole life is based on lies.

Pretty much. I just can't believe he has the gall to claim he is making a stand for "personal responsibility."

Frickin tree-huggin hippies. I hate these people. They are worse than Greenpeace. I say we just lynch them all. They are way more annoying than any group of people I have ever heard of or known of.

I wish I had the treatment that Mike gets. His living quarters are absolutely amazing and I would say he is the most cared for living creature on the campus. (that includes the football players) It doesnt seem like he has it too bad

Look, I am against cruelty to animals. I think the vast majority of people are.

However, extremists such as PETA, rarely do their cause much good. There is a balance.

The bottom line actual tigers living in the wild are around 500. Their numbers are dropping and dwindling.

The life expectancy of a wild tiger is 5 years. LSU's Mike the Tiger has a life expectancy of 15 years.

Mike the Tiger is a domesticated Tiger. He wouldn't survive a week in the wild.

So, where are we going to keep all of these domesticated tigers? I would much rather tigers being housed and cared for like Mike the Tiger.

I hope that all domesticated tigers (which outnumber wild tigers) are cared for like Mike the Tiger.

Instead of picking on the Taj Mahal of Mike the Tiger, PETA should focus on those facilities that are inadequate for domesticated tigers. They might make some hay.

But, they don't do that. So, they end up pissing off the vast majority of normal human beings.
