But how much of that was due to lack of speed on the outside?
how is this cured with jacob cutrera at LB?
but against misdirection/option offenses, our guys would just take horrible angles to the ball if they weren't named beckwith

Aren't Riley and Sheppard both supposed to have better speed than Highsmith and Sanders?
prolly faster on the field than both...sanders timed really well, but he was very slow to process information and he played as slow as lionel turner. odds are at least 1 of the OLBs runs slower than sanders tho

quote:i know i havent been impressed with this kid when ive seen him play. and i understand hes always hurt, but i dont think hes good enough to miss practice/ all spring, and jump into the games and perform. hopefully his shoulder/<insert ailing body part> will heal and we can get this kid playing well.
Cutrera a starter
in his defense, jack hunt looked lost in 02, then was an important cog in our 03 defense. i hope he has a similar change of fortune

Oh I'm not suggesting he will help the speed situation.

Our Linebackers were part of a Defense that finished #3 in the Nation
and?
our D gave up a shitload of yards/points against non-traditional offenses
we shut down traditional offenses, esp if they had a mediocre/bad QB. and we faced a LOT of those last year
and as for special teams...
71st in punt return yardage defense
40th in kickoff return yardage defense
106th in punt return average
49th in net punting
93rd in kickoff return
average ranking of 71.8, and this is with amazing athletes on our coverages/returns
LINK
those statistical rankings show an AMAZING special teams performance in 2007

What did big-time programs like USC, Notre Dame, and LSU see in Cutrera? Why was he so highly rated coming out of high school? Are you writing off his career after an injury plagued freshman season? Other than the fact that know you know more about recruiting than Miles, Carroll, Weiss, etc.

net punting is a much more important stat to judge our overall punting game
we all know fisher had a strong leg, but how well did we cover his punts? how many of his punts were touchbacks with low net yardage gained? etc

Are Touchbacks the goal of Punters? Most Punters either kick the shite out of it to get out of trouble or try to punt the ball inside the 20 yard line. Touchbacks are not the goal of most Punters, in fact it usually pisses them off.

those stats are a positive for the D last year, well below FL's season averages
I do like the fact that the three early games spread it out, and Troy should be running alot of the same stuff Auburn will run...playing spreads were 1-off games a few years ago, so you really didn't worry about building a defense around it. This is changing so I expect teams will continue to get better defending it...

no

and overkick coverage, allowing returners to get returns set up? stupid thing for a punter to want to do

between the 20 yard line and end zone

exactly. and it hurts their net punting average
net punting is what matters, not how far a punter can kick the ball
your punter can average 80 fricking yards a punt, but if the other team constantly gets big returns or he's giving you +20 in net yardage by kicking it for a touchback, then you don't really have a good punting unit
our punting unit was below average last year

well above our average, however
that's what we're looking at
quote:
Troy should be running alot of the same stuff Auburn will run
for the most part
they will likely put up some yards against us just b/c they run spread option and push push push the pace
those are 2 things our pellini-based Ds don't really do well against
quote:
playing spreads were 1-off games a few years ago
well LSU hasn't done well under pellini against either spread passing attacks or option attacks
i still don't know why UTenn didn't run more spread option against us. everytime they did they'd get 6-15 yards

So....the coach considers him able to play. But, the message board kingpin who's in law school isn't quite sold?

coaches tell stupid stuff to the media to give indirect support to their players
coaches also make mistakes. hell substitution pattern problems have been a major frickup for LSU for years

i thought riley and sheppard were running with the 1's at practice
