Exactly, Mainieri calls the pitches.
He doesn't call every pitch, they give Gibbs a ton of freedom to call his own game. Sometimes there is just a situation where a coach wants to see a certain pitch.

Yes pitching is the problem, of course. But it is all on the pitchers and the pitching coach, not the catcher. shite Micah Gibbs is the best catcher LSU has ever had. If pitching was just based on the catcher, then the pitchers probably wouldn't give up any runs ever.

The only time Gibbs calls the majority of the pitches is during the week if we play a crappy team or when Grewe is off recruiting which has only happened once or twice this year. Normally he schedules to recruit away from game days. However, coach will let Gibbs call some from time to time. Just not as often during SEC games.
This is what I was told a couple months ago by someone. I do not know where they heard it from, so it's a possibility not a promise.

It's incredible the pinpoint accuracy this guys have (at least when they are on). After talking with one of their pitchers he mentioned the called pitch will be type and location, not just low outside but 2 inches off the plate, 4 inches off the plate, etc.
After a particular bad outting I asked one what the coaches said and he said nothing, the pitches were exactly where they were called, just the batter hit them. What we sometimes blame on the pitchers is really not there fault at all.
It gave me a new level of respect for what these pitchers were able to do. And it also was a eye opener that I really didn't know the finer points of baseball when it gets to this level.

I see him looking into the dugout nearly every pitch. To me, that indicates he is getting some sort of directions from the coaches, whether they are calling all the pitches or not. And his bat has been more than steady. Hitting around 400 last I looked.

Nothing wrong with LSU pitching. Just in a funk. It happens
Yes- LSU was doing just fine without Ranaudo in the lineup. When Chris returned and was shelled on his first two starts it sent this team into a mental dive. Ill bet if Chris comes out tonight and has a great game the team is back in the race. For this reason this is an important game tonight for the tigers though. Any time a team's best player begins to play poorly, it only has a negative effect.

No, they've all been hanging their pitches, leaving them up in the zone. it's all on the mound.
