If Saban was around, Flynn may have had a chance. That's an absurd debate. Who should have played: The guy who played all year or the guy that didn't play at all?

Russell earned the number 1 overall pick in the draft that year. Probably didn't help him that it was Oakland, but he was going very high regardless. Work ethic and his weight problem didn't help either. Anyway, Flynn held for PATs and FGs that year.
As I recall, the stats Russell put up in 06 were clearly better than Flynn did in 2007.
Not much of an argument.

100% Russell. He convinced everyone he was the #1 pick in the draft that year. As stated, your friend is stupid.

JR>>Flynn but Flynn>>everybody since and he got a ring so its a happy story.

Yep. Russell was way better at LSU. But Flynn made all those other teams lose two games just like he did, which gave his season a better ending.

Depends. Are we basing this off NFL success?

JR 2006 Stats:
67.8%
3,129 yds
28 TDs
8 Ints
MF 2007 Stats:
56.3%
2,407 Yds
21 TDs
11 Ints
Russell was the better college player, Flynn just got Florida and Auburn, our two toughest games, at home.

So your friend thinks that the #1 overall pick shouldn't have even been playing. Make new friends

Matt Flynn may perhaps be one of my favorite tigers of all time, but your friend is delusional. Russell was a freak of nature. He and Rohan are the best tiger QBs of the last 30 years IMO

If we beat Florida in the swamp that year, I'm pretty sure we would've gotten to play them again in the SEC championship game and the winner of that would go on to play Ohio state. Would've been intense.
Jamarcus fumbled the snap on their goal line, or someone else fumbled? And I think we also had a muffed punt and a muffed kickoff. Both of which were turned into touchdowns for the gaytors. We had 5 total turnovers that game... Also, the first appearance of the tebow jump pass.
Also, lost to auburn with Craig Davis getting smashed on their 2 or 3 yard line on the last play of the game after the blown PI call.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I'd take Russell. Dude was hard to bring down as a runner and had a superior arm. Also, he led us down the field against Tennessee in Knoxville to pull out the game winning TD pass with like 10 seconds left. Russell was pretty clutch most of the time in his games as a tiger. And I also think the 2006, team was better than 2007. We lost 4 1st round picks to the draft and then still won the natty the next year.

Not saying it wins the day or anything, but Flynn's rushing ability adds something to the equation. From 2007:
100 carries, 402 yds gain, 187 lost, 215 net, 4 TDs.
JR2006:
52, 282, 140, 142, 1.
Recollection is that Flynn's mobility definitely added another dimension to the offensive threat.
Also bear in mind Flynn was banged up for a few games, ankle I believe, and didn't play in 2 games, and arguably not as mobile for some of the games he did play.
All things considered, I think it's closer than many suggest, but with a slight nod to JR.
