Holy Crap. That is some shoddy journalism no matter how you slice it.
She quoted an ex player but not that he knew what had happened but that he said it would be a major violation if the player was paid.
So, the article appears to have zero sources and makes a major accusation.
How does something like that get on the front page without any real sources?

1) I dont really care what happened either way
2) It came from a "source" so she's reporting what she has
3) They are students learning
4) I doubt the world is worried about The Daily Reveille

The world's probably not worried, but the fact that the world has access to apparent libelous information about LSU makes this more serious than you're giving it credit for.

The first thing you learn in MC2010 at LSU is to stay away from anonymous sources. Unless it's world-changing news from an absolutely SOLID source who CANNOT reveal their identity for safety purposes, you don't run with it.
This is a stupid slip up from both the writer and the editor. You don't do things like this. It's a suable offense.

not if the source comes forward with evidence and its true or its just found to be true all together. All I'm saying is I doubt this girl got a call from Cecil Collins or Larry Foster who told her. I'm giving her (and maybe wrongly) enough credit to think that she trusts her source to be on target.

really the people who are fricking retarded in this thread are the ones who keep saying "liberals" and shite like that. I'm not even a liberal but its just retarded. Should be more like "students" than "liberals"

Well the put it on the front page of the print version, above the fold.
You can't pull that.
You can't pull that.

Liberals
Did a liberal frick your wife, or why are you choosing to grind this ax right now? This has nothing to do with political beliefs. And unless you know this writer personally, she could very well be conservative (many students at LSU are).

The article never said the source didn't know what happened. The article makes it seem as though the source knows.

Let's just say that someone writes an article that you frequently have sex with cattle on the levee. How does anyone know that this isn't true?

Only if the information is false. We don't know if it is or isn't.
Also, it could be false but substantially true. See the Eminem case.

Or she does, but that wasn't good enough for the Director of Student Media.

they better have a damn good source. All I'm saying is this girl has a trusted source so its not lible until its proven untrue. Won't all of you feel stupid if it is true?
