Yeah. It's tough to find a good barometer.

What can you use? Postseason appearances? Final Fours or Sweet 16s? That's tough, because what about VCU. Do we want to be VCU?
You just have to consider everything. Can't point to any one thing and say, "THIS is what defines a 'good' program."

I'd take consistency......500 or better in conference with a really good season every few years.

NCAA tournament as much as possible.

I think LSU can aspire to this....it's reasonable

Hey Elleshoe, how do you get photo of Baton Rouge's premier bowling sports writer on your site. Bowling Congress coming soon.

May not be too outlandish!

Bring back Pokey Chapman as men's basketball coach. She knows how to recruit the south. She will have a great offense, a shut down defense and she will leave the players alone this time.

Certainly, but the more I think about it, it's probably the best barometer you can find. If I were to "rank" arbitrarily the other 11 SEC schools as far as "basketball prowess since 1993", would you disagree with this ranking? I've removed LSU to try to add some objectivity....

Maybe Vandy a little higher? (But Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama have made more noise in the tournament... I think all have won the SEC since '93, but I don't think Vandy has.)

Maybe Auburn is better than South Carolina?

But certainly, the top 3 are the best programs in the conference right now.

Kentucky

Florida
MSU

Tennessee
Alabama
Arkansas
Vanderbilt

Ole Miss
Georgia
South Carolina
Auburn

I think that's pretty close. Kentucky is the best, by far. Florida and State are better than the rest. Tennessee, Bama, Arkansas and Vandy are a toss-up, Ole Miss, Georgia, USC and Auburn are the bottom feeders. Would anyone really argue with that?

Now, let's look at conference winning percentage since 1993:

Kentucky (.766)
Florida (.618)
MSU (.539)
Tennessee (.520)
Alabama (.515)
Arkansas (.493)
Vanderbilt (.480)
Ole Miss (.444)
Georgia (.425)
South Carolina (.408)
Auburn (.396)
LSU (.393)

I think that's probably the best apples to apples comparison out there.

Northwestern(they've never been to a tourney, that you put maybe speaks volumes)
Penn St.
Rutgers
Seton Hall
Arizona St.

Penn State, yes. Arizona St. - not even close.

I'm now up to five major conference (ACC, BIG 10, BIG 12, PAC-12, Big East) programs that have a worse conference record than LSU since 1993:

DePaul, Rutgers, Northwestern, Baylor, Penn State

I've eliminated:
Other SEC schools, Oregon State, Miami, FSU, Va. Tech, Arizona State

Still need to check:
Seton Hall, Iowa State

I'm open to other suggestions. I'm genuinely curious at this point.

As the other guy pointed out if all you're measuring is conference record then that's bad way of going about it. I guarantee you Ole Miss would trade their 2005-2008 basketball seasons with LSU even though Ole Miss was more consistent over that time period.

Do you disagree with this ranking for SEC basketball programs? Not just this year, but for the last 5 or 10 years? 15 years? I think it's REALLY close to accurate. Remove LSU from the discussion from a second.

Kentucky

Florida
MSU

Tennessee
Alabama
Arkansas
Vanderbilt

Ole Miss
Georgia
South Carolina
Auburn

Mr. Sheep are you a CPA or an engineer? What stat do have for the #1 recruit in the state calling out TJ? For TJ to watch this kid one time in four years says it all. Not to mention the way gathers throws TJ under the bus, man. The #1 player in the state two years in a row and our head coach who we pay 1.5 mill a year saw him play one time in BR.....WOW. Can't wait to hear the spin on this. Losing the kid was one thing but getting called out like that is devastating. I couldn't believe what I was reading

you might have to put UF ahead of UK for lately FWIW but UK is obviously better historically.

Great retort. I'm surprised you didn't have your usual canned responses such as "Who should we be like, Duke?" or "We have the lowest win percentage in history..."

Chicken, can you please add an ignore button? It would make these hoops threads much more bearable.

so this is the weekly LSU should get Drew thread? Nice...

on a side note. I am still pumping up Shaka Smart. VCU is 20-5 and 11-2 in the CAA with a team fresh with new faces. Aside from Burgess, the big guns who took them deep in the tourney are gone.
