I don't think most truly understand addiction and think it's just weak or bad people who made poor life choices. And some of that is true to a point, it's a bad life choice, and I regret going down the path..but there's usually a lot more underlying stuff behind it.
It's usually not people looking for a buzz and having that grow into dependence. It's a coping mechanism for a lot of people which brings us to mental illness, and all that comes with that beast. I've learned you can't convince some, but telling your story can help a lot of people understand it better.
