Nobody's moving any goalposts. The man has assembled a decent coaching staff, had a top ten finish and is doing well recruiting. Why can't the university show the guy that they're confident that the guy is moving the program in the right direction without a bunch of haters freaking out?
Let's not forget that Orgeron's pitch to begin with was that he would be a cheap OC so that that cash could be used to purchase the top coordinators.
That money was used to retain Dave Aranda - a Les Miles hire.
If you subtract the overtime debacle against Texas A&M, LSU's defense finished top 5 in scoring defense and the offense somewhere past 50.
Ed Orgeron's defensive staff predates his tenure, and his offensive coordinator worked for Miles.
Indisputable facts:
1. LSU's record this year is largely based on their defensive performance.
2. LSU's offense performed better under Matt Canada than it has under Steve.
3. The staff looks a whole lot like it did under Miles - many of the same people.
4. LSU's recruiting has trended down.

making a further commitment without gathering more information.
We have 3 years left. Take 1 more to see if we’re wctually trending up
You and ROger will say “next year is a prove it year” while blowing O and now you’re trying to say we should even wait till after the show me year to extend his contract, and buyout

No this is why the people running things are constantly paying millions in buyouts.
He has 3 full seasons left on his contract
He is not a lame duck
He isn’t a lame duck after NEXT season.

One of the biggest issues of a HC extension is keeping continuity in recruiting and keeping the staff together. If CEO does not have a vote of confidence of the Admin then several of these coaches walk
Have any of these coaches that we wanted walked?

2017 team overachieved and could have done better
Yeah this is 100% bullshite. We went 2-4 vs teams that were over .500

I am Sure whatever Ohio middle school you go to has a snow day, but why are you posting in a thread you think should be over?
Sorry but as an alum who will be a fan in 2020 after Joe Burrow graduates, I would like to see some fiscal responsibility from my AD so I dont have To pay 20 dollars for nachos so we can bay Os 9 million dollar buyout.

No games should be subtracted. They all count. Be that as it may, I would suggest that if you use ranking to determine the success or failure of D.C. and OC, then you open yourself up to an argument that ranking should also gauge the HC. By that measure, O finished in top 10. A much higher rank than his pay.
By the same measure, Aranda finished below his pay.
For the record, my jury is still out on HC. 2017 was disappointing. 2018 showed promise, but major questions on offense and OC's ability to incorporate a modern passing game. This year will be critical in determining if SE is the right man for the OC job.
Finally, the line about staff looks same has already been refuted by facts. Not counting Coach O, only 4 of the 10 asst coaches from Miles are still here. And 2 of the 4 are in completely different roles.

Not saying it will happen, but if LSU wins title or makes it to CFP, the price of the extension will go up, exponentially.

And justifiably so.
But if he wins a Title or CFP he’s getting a new contract regardless of this year.
We’re not paying him 3.5 million at that point.
If we have an amazing season we’re going to be renegotiating anyway

I think we should be willing to take that risk.

Scrimping on the HC's salary isn't fiscal responsibility. 35 Power-5 coaches make more than O. Only a handful of Power-5 coaches had better seasons.
Pro tip: Stop by the 7-11 on your way to the game. Load up on nachos.

Point taken.
In negotiations, little things like extending contract before "absolute proof" of CFP or national title, can save big dollars in the long run. Waiting, can harbor ill feelings and hurt pride and raise the ultimate price significantly.
However, either route is taking a gamble. And hindsight will be 20/20.

This argument makes 0 sense.
We’re getting a great deal! Too 5 finish for too 35 money is a GOOD thing. We also need to save that money for our top 5 coaching staff salary and ever increasing analyst pool.

Listen up, carpetbagger
No 7-11s in Baton Rouge, and I assume even the Horseshoe prohibits outside food

46 people actually are for extending O’s contract? Seriously? Why? What’s the hurry?

Without agreeing or disagreeing, reasonable minds may differ, as we have seen in this thread.

there is pretty much a market price for a championship coachZ
We’d be lucky to only have to pay him 6 mill a year, he’s probably get 7. That’s just the going rate.
At this point we gave a guy with a 16-27 record a chance to coach an elite program, I dint Think we owe O anything till he earns it. He’s gotten all the love and support he deserves and more so.
