Good question and tough to call. I like DMitch's intangibles a little bit more. I think.
Both have quick releases and deep range. I think Thornton might be a little more purer or consistent with the deep 3. MT is also bigger which gives him an advantage on the boards and using his strength down low both offensively and defensively.
But DMitch has superior ball handling and quickness. Also, Thornton has disappeared at times whereas I don't recall that happening much with Mitchell.
Overall, slight lean to DMitch.

again, the percentages say that Mitchell disappeared much more.
His FG% hovered around 40% his whole career.
He never led LSU in scoring. And never averaged 20 PPG.

No doubt Thornton is a better "scorer" right now. But don't forget Mitchell also had to deal with Brady refusing to start him for some unknown reason, and then he also had to play out of position at the PG spot when Brady finally had him starting.
So then we get into apples and oranges because Thornton last year is WAY different than this year. The big difference is head coach. Unfortunately, all DMitch had was Brady.
Based on individual skill set and other intangibles, I lean towards Mitchell. But I love Thornton's game right now. So like I said, tough call.

Have to remember that DMitch's stats take in his first two years, before he really attained a high degree of consistency. Upside game is probably more of a lean to MT with his size and strength IMHO. DMitch was a great Tiger though.

Lester Earl has pointed out the stats to disprove this. But just think back to the DMitch's senior year. He hit some clutch shots, no question, but a few games he really struggled shooting the ball. Still, its a close call. DMitch will always be special to Tiger fans, but we are lucky to be experiencing something pretty special with Thornton these past 2 years.

Darrell had the guts to take big shots and he made big shots. He hits 3 or 4 game winners his senior year. He was just a good bball player. He was undersized but played big .I think Marcus is a better overall basketball player though

To be honest its not fair to compare the two. Thorton is a bigger, stronger and scores more per game. But Darell hit the 3 that beat a&m which if he wouldn't have done that...we'd be talking about how we should have beat A&M in 05-06.
It comes down to this:
They are clearly the most important players on thier team respectivley. We wouldn't be where we are now and then without either.
