Texas Tech and it was in the mid 90s. I would guess 94 or 95, although my memory is fading in my old age.

I think Happy Valley refers to the area around State College, PA which is where Penn State is located. Beaver Stadium is where the Nittany Lions play football home games.

Took a guy to the LSU v Uf game this year who was at the 2008 PSU vs Illinois game. He said that he would easily take Tiger Stadium over Happy Valley, and we lost.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure T.S. was rocking, it was the #1 team in the country. If he would have went to 2005 OSU vs PSU, his opinion might be different (and it might be the same, who knows).

I can play that game too -- I was at Tiger Stadium for the Ole Miss game last year. It was an afternoon game, great atmosphere but it certainly didn't feel electric (like a night game against top 10 rival). I was at Beaver Stadium for the 2005 game against Ohio State and would put that up against any game in-terms of difficult environment.
I can't wait to get back down there for a night game to properly experience Tiger Stadium. PSU at home has an 88.9% winning percentage over the past 5 years and LSU at home has an 82.5% winning percentage. They're without a doubt two of the most difficult places to play in CFB.

As much as it pains me to say this, in order for you to experience the Tiger Stadium you often hear about, the following conditions much exist:
1. Night game
2. Not too cold or rainy
3. Game must be close going into the 4th quarter( Even if we are blowing you out, our fans will head for the exits).
4. Non-televised game will help, although that would never happen in a PSU-LSU game.

You should add
5. Team must be ranked in Top 10
6. Fans must have some obvious hate for team/player/coach

My niece graduated from Penn State so I had the opportunity to spend a weekend there with her and my nephews. It is a cool place - small college town in the middle of nowhere. Lots of bars and places to hang out all around the campus. The locals there were not ready for me: I humiliated a few of the bartenders who tried to make fun of my "suthurn" accent. Lots of fun, though.
The stadium is large but not impressive at all. The outside looks like bleachers - the dead spaces under the stands are bare. I cannot imagine it being very loud. Hell, I shouted down an entire bar myself and told them they were all a bunch of p*ssies and if they wanted tgo see a real party school they needed to come to LSU. That would never happen in Baton Rouge.
My niece wears the purple and gold every Saturday. I taught her well. On New Years Day she will be wearing her Matt Flynn jersey and rooting for the Tigers against her own school. I am the man.

Death Valley definitely only earns it's name during big games. If it's a big game, I find it hard to believe any place could out-do us, but it sure takes a lot for LSU fans to get up for games against mediocre competition and it doesn't take much to deter fans from being loud or staying long.

Then you have a very poor imagination.

quote:I realize that you can't compare stadiums because fans are to passionate and will always vouch for their team. On the other hand, I have been to many great atmosphere lsu games (UGA 03, UF 07, Tenn 00, Bama 08, etc) and I have been to some other D1 enviornments for big games (Lincoln, Norman, Blacksburg, South Bend, and a few more) These were all vs high quality opponents and VT was verse a #2 Miami team at the time. The only one that I believe even competes with a good atmosphere at LSU is Oklahoma. It was a big time game between 2 undefeated teams and when they announced that LSU lost to Kentucky that place was rockin. Not as rockin as the USC lose announced but pretty close. I know that has nothing to do with Penn State's enviorment im just saying from my own personal experiences, LSU has yet to be topped.

Sad when the loudest the Stadium has been in recent history had nothing to do with the game on the field.

I've been to Norman twice, both times to see them play top 25 teams. The last time I went, Barry Switzer was announced and the crowd went wild. I have never seen anything like it. Jesus Christ wouldn't have gotten as warm a reception.
I'm not going to knock Norman as a loud venue. I just think Tiger Stadium is better. Of course, I may be biased.

Tiger Stadium has lost some of its luster. It can still be loud and intimidating on big games, one or two plays in mediocre games.
On a good day its difficult to beat, however. I haven't been to PSU, though have been to quite a few stadiums and its on the list.

Which is the more difficult place to play?
Depends on how good the team is at the time.
As far as atmosphere, probably close to the same. As far as potential loudness, never heard PSU mentioned in this category like Tiger Stadium, UF or even Oregon.

Beaver Stadium is named after James A Beaver who was a governor of Pennsylvania 1887-1891 and president of the Board of Trustees (not former coach).
Happy Valley nickname seems to come from the time of the Great Depression as the area was not hit as hard as the rest of the country. It's stuck ever since.
Was in Tiger stadium a few years ago for the game against Florida. Loved the trip. The stadium on that day was not as loud as big games in Happy Valley- but it was not a night game (and LSU lost). Can hardly use 1 game to rate any stadium. Both are very difficult places for opposing teams but clearly night games and big time match ups take it to the next level.

I interviewed for residency at Penn St and went to a game there. Tiger Stadium is the greatest Stadium I've ever been to.

Tiger Stadium. Live in Pennsylvania and go to school at LSU, so I've been in both. Beaver stadium has a great atmosphere and is very loud. They would wins hand down, except they have a problem. All 4 corners of their stadium are open and lead out to the mountains, so the sound escapes. If they had them closed off, the 100,000+ people they have at every game would make it louder. But since they don't, Tiger Stadium is much louder.
