Did you watch his post game interview? Never once did he say I or me. It was "The Team", we, etc.
It's easy to say things like that. It's a totally different thing to show it. Team players don't prioritize "getting even" with their opponent over helping the team win.

Yep! He is a mere human...mistakes are a possiblity.
He is human, right?
Yes he made a mistake. A mistake of judgement when he let his emotions get the best of him. I don't want him jailed for it. I don't hate him for it. But that doesn't mean it should be treated as if it was a missed tackle or blown coverage.

He has actually lightened up IMHO than his norm.
I said this exact thing during the game to my friend. I even asked her if she thought the coaches told him to tone it down b/c he wasn't as ferocious as normal. Maybe the 2 weeks off had an effect....?
And I still don't see how that is a holding penalty. What is the exact definition of holding? I thought you could touch (not grab) anywhere on the inside front of the jersey. Isn't that what he did?

You really believe this????? OK. I am bashing the guy for making a boneheaded play in the most important game this year.
I do. Les does too. PJ it's been a while since you played the game? And I'm wondering if you ever blocked down field on kicks/punts?

He made a holding penalty on a gunner lining up the punt returner. Beckham might have juked the gunner, or he might have been blown up. A freshman punt returner getting blown up inside the 20 is a legitimate risk to fumble and lose the game.
Mathieu made contact on the shoulder pads, in the front. He didn't block in the back, he didn't grab the facemask. What he did wrongly was grab the jersey instead of thump him cleanly.
Full speed the 1st time, the play does look bad, and undisciplined. But watch it again: he came extremely close to making an amazing and totally legal block.

Their are always going to be people that justify bush league play. Just look at Arkansas message boards last week. This is an eerily similar split of fans who condone/condemn the hit.
You couldn't be more wrong. TM7 did NOT plow over a defenseless punt returner that called for a fair catch and then stand over him bragging/showboating about it. As a matter of fact, he threw his arms up as if to imply he didn't even mean to do it. You are way off...

A guy who routinely covers gunners knows that it is not acceptable to take a guy down from behind.
I don't even see why that's a penalty anyway. Are the players NOT supposed to touch the FRONT of the jersey only (without grabbing it)? Is there some rule where you can't block at all if the player is running?

The only split here are LSU fans and truly ignorant people.

Which he did NOT do. Even if he did....more power to him. Why not make it fair?

I think that is what we are all agreeing on...it was a penalty. Nothing more, just a bad decision. No intention to knock the guy out, just letting his emotions get to him. I don't want him to stop talking b/c of it and I couldn't care less what other teams (or their fans) think about it. They are clearly jealous b/c TM7 DOES make plays.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
I have a very rudimentary understanding of all the details of rules but I thought that wasn't even a penalty (unless he got a handful of jersey). You explained it well.

Yes, agree with this.
So you agree he can talk smack since he backs it up by making plays in every game?

I've never seen so much criticism on a play where the guy hurt himself by falling stupid and hitting his head... I'm curious when Chad Jones nearly decapitated Arkansas receiver Joe Adams was their this much talk going on about him being dirty?

Rules question, to anyone hwo legitimately knows-
if Mathieu had merely made contact (a thump) instead of a grab, is there a penalty? He was behind, but the only contact made was on the front, righthand side of the Bama player's shoulder pad. There was no contact or push to the backside, and really very little to the side even.
If a penalty, what is it- illegal contact? Is it due to most of Mathieu's body being behind the Bama player (but NOT the only part that is making actual contact)?
I ask this, because it was an unusual play. But you can't say he clipped or blocked in the back, because he didn't. It WAS an extreme angle, but I've seen some similar blocks- in that the blocker was behind but at a less severe angle- where the contact was made in the right place, and it was clean. If Mathieu was side-by-side basically, he could hit the guy in the front of the pads and nothing would be said.
