I know Saban was big into Karate for the 4th qtr program.

Not sure how Miles has tweaked the 4th qtr program

what is this term 4th quarter program?

they may have been doing some shotokan karate, but they sure as hell wasn't doing any jump side kicks, board breaks, or sparring before the fall season. if anything the karate helped with flexibility and mind set more than anything else. that and helped their brawling skills whenever some of the guys may get into trouble at tigerland.

The past couple of years LSU has looked tired and physically worn out at the end of the year thus the poor record.

There was an interesting dicussion on this is one of the Chavis to UGA threads. In summary some were suggesting that it is not conditioning but the fact Miles' practices are much more strenous and therefore completely wear the players out by November. (Rumor is Chavis and Miles had a disagreement on the matter). Judging from Miles' own admission about our practices being "too light" when he arrived I am going with this theory.

I haven't been to an LSU practice, but have been to a Pete Carroll USC practice and there is no way LSU's could be as intense as USC's. But it could be part of the problem.

martial arts in the nfl became popularized by the great new england patriots lineback and with Hershal Walker.

Saban believed in it and hired a martial arts instructor and started LSUs 4th qtr program. Mainly for balance.

4th qtr program runs from Jan to March and after spring practice.

I can tell u that in the 90's when I played that the coaches said to get bigger eat bricks if we had to. Now I was not lucky enough to get to be a tiger but on my team we had just about 60 percent use but just during summer before 4 th of July because NCAA would test infall one time. Univ would random for smoke and coke after that. Steriods are in every program.

i can see how it helps balance done martial arts myself. just dont think its something that should be done very intensely such as head on 100 live sparring. although i would think judo or aikido would help with balance more than just karate.

What is the love fest with Moffit with you guys

Ok, the guy has been with four different national championship squads. Do you think he just forgot what works and quit teaching the kids?

Moffitt is a good SC. However, he seems to be satisifed with what he knows works: power complexes. However, times are changing and Moffitt refuses to acknowledge very useful tools for S&C. A great example would be kettlebell. In 2007, a friend of mine asked Moffitt what he thought of the kettlebell swing and snatch. His response was that they were "just a fad that would fade in a few years." I am still shocked by that response when you consider that several SEC and nearly half of the NFL use them in some form......but hey, who am I to argue to LORD MOFFITT since LSU has the strongest players on the field....right???

Hard to blame poor combines on S&C coach when a lot of those players go to combine specific training programs and don't even work with Moffitt for those months. Also, you can't underestimate the attitude of players when it comes to training. A poor team attitude can ruin off season training. If you ask me this team lacks intensity which leads me to believe they lack it in the weight room too. Thats on the team not Moffitt

Please some one who has actually trained under GH please right the naysayers of TM. I have friends who train with GH and believe me they are staying up to date with the latest greatest techniques for training fast twitch response. Blame the players or his staff but not his philosophy.

I am concerned at the conditioning in the 4th qtr since Saban left. PJ had cramps at the wrong time against bama and we haven't kept a lead in the 4th. The D line looked overweight. this year. Of course it is probably my eyes playing tricks on me.

They played like it too. The only one who doesnt look overweight and looks like a true DL specimen is Brockers but he was on the bench.

for the 1000th freaking time, Moffitt doesn't train players to excel at the combine, he trains them to have functional football strength, speed, and agility.

Anyone that blames LSU players combine misfortunes on Moffitt is just plain dumb

This is 100% true. His job is to enhance their skills through (just like you said) functional strength and conditioning. His programs have changed little during his time under both Saban and Miles. It doesn't matter how effective the S&C program is, injuries are going to happen...it's the same way with every football program. If a player is experiencing cramps it can just as easily be the player's fault for properly hydrating the night before the game and/or the morning of.
