As noted in an earlier thread, when the Vols are winning, there are 100K+ fans packed into an 80K seat stadium. I have never sat so knee to chest packed in as I have in that place. And the fan behind you has his legs pushed into your back. And will not describe how it feels to have a 300 lb lard arse sitting next to you for 4 quarters. Everything else was/is great, love the Vol Navy & Calhouns...they ran out of kegs the Friday nite the year we went. But a day game, bright sun, all those bright arse butt ugly orange shirts surrounding you. My eyes hurt for hrs afterwards.

We had a pretty good time. Friday night we ate at the copper cellar on Cumberland, then went to Calhoun's and had a few drinks. We met some guys from New Hampshire that aren't really college football fans but are trying to make a trip every year to see all the big stadiums. They are supposed to come to Baton Rouge next year for the OleMiss game. We left Calhoun's with them and went to Barley's in old city which was a cool place.
They had rented a house boat down on the river so we met back up with them the next day and hung out there for awhile. Went back to Calhoun's, but it was so crowded there was no way to get a table. Just hung out drinking and eating off the food truck. We walked down to the Vol Navy and a TN guy there invited us on his boat so we hung out there until kick off.
Stadium needs some serious renovations, but overall I enjoyed it. We donned our rain-suits and never left our seats. That weather was CRAZY. We were about 50 feet away from the spot where the piece of the scoreboard hit.
Overall good trip. The only thing I think I would do different is not try to hang out at Calhoun's on gameday and hit up another part of campus. Tiger fans were out in mass. As another poster said, everywhere we stopped on the way up there and on the way back had Tiger fans.

Vols are absolutely my second favorite team in the conference, and Knoxville is easily one of my favorite SEC towns.
1) You immediately have something in common with every fan you meet: a shared, visceral hate for Alabama
2) The team has been so bad for so long, you know the fans aren't bandwagoners
3) the city/area are beautiful and the weather this time of year is usually amazing
4) Bars stay open until 3
5) We don't play often enough to develop any kind of lasting animosity (e.g., Auburn)
6) If you have to worship a Manning, at least they chose the best one.
Great city, great stadium, great fans. Since my first trip to Knoxville, I've had no trouble pulling for them.
ETA: opinions may differ, but I think Rocky Top is a great song + I think their classic home uniform is one of the best in CFB.

Calhoun's was our first stop Saturday and not staying there was one of the best decisions of the weekend. Ended up on Gay street and just did some bar hopping and went to Market Square.
