Just so they understand, it's not LSU.
This was published on Stewart Mandel's COLLEGE FOOTBALL MAILBAG on 06/26/08; The question was
College basketball has the ACC/Big Ten challenge, so I wanted to know what you would think of something like that for college football? Obviously it would be very difficult since teams don't play 30-plus games, but what would you think of some similar arrangement like that in college football?
Response
I'd love to see one, particularly between the Big Ten and SEC, since their fans are always yapping at each other. As a matter of fact, Doug Lesmerises, the fine Ohio State beat writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, actually penned a detailed proposal for this very concept last season. As you can see, his plan involves an entire weekend of Big Ten-SEC doubleheaders played at neutral sites throughout both the Midwest and South. He even scheduled it for eight years down the road to account for non-conference deals teams may have already made for upcoming seasons.
Predictably, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany shot it down.
This happens all the time hence the Az (Pac-10) fear.

The whole argument is getting rather pointless. The past is the past. USC has had a great football program and will continue to have a great football program in the next several years. I think the same can be said for LSU. We have certainly had more bumps along the way with some lackluster seasons, but LSU has as much football tradition as anywhere else in the country. Gameday at LSU is the best college gameday experience there is. Bama may have spanked our arse for several years...but we always managed to piss off Bear along the way. LSU isn't going anywhere. Let USC have their self-proclaimed titles...we'll just keep playing great college football.
OU, Miami, ND, Bama, the OSU...time to add USC to the list.

Never said that, never implied that. My point, again, is pointing out LSU's awful practice of OOC scheduling TO THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE THE OOC SCHEDULE IS TYPICALLY AWFUL.
1...LSU had ALWAYS scheduled TOUGH OOC opponents pre 1992, the year the SEC expanded. With the expansion, LSU was forced to give up an OOC opponent...The repacement... playing the 26th ranked ALL-Time program every year. Before I go on to fact #2, here are some of LSU's OOC opponent pre-SEC expansion.......
1991---Texas A$M, Florida St
1990---Texas A$M. Florida St
1989---Texas A$M, Florida St
1988---Texas A$M, Ohio St, Miami, Fl
1987---Texas A$M, Ohio St
1986---Texas A$M, North Carolina, Notre Dame
1985---North Carolina, Colorado St, Notre Dame
1984---Arizona, USC, Notre Dame
1983---Florida St, Washington
1982---Oregon St, Florida St
1981---Notre Dame, Oregon St, Florida St
1980---Florida St, Kansas St, Colorado
1979---Colorado, USC, Florida St
Notice that this was EVERY year, but the nature of the beast being the SEC expansion forced LSU to do away with many of these home and home and the quality opponents LSU onced enjoyed would not come to Tiger Stadium without a return trip, regardless of a fat paycheck, and LSU being one of only a few schools that would lose HUGE amounts of $$$s for losing another home game every other year since the expansion was not going to take that finacial lost.
2..Whether you want to believe it or not, LSU continues scheduling tough OOC and MANY agree, only to back out on short notice and LSU is forced to take any comers interested for a butt kickin worth $400,000. Heck, LSU was willing to lose a home game and play ND in Dallas, but ND refused. Both teams would have benefitted with recruiting efforts in that area, National TV exposure, and big paycheck from network. Texas Tech almost took LSU's offer bur refused as well. This goes on every year.
So, you make it point that LSU has an "awful practice" of OOC scheduling and my point and proof is, LSU doesn't. Never did and some of our poor OOC is not LSU's fault anyway when a decent scheduled opponent bails out, leaving a subpar opponent in its place, which seems like every year.

LSU's schedule was much tougher than USC's last year. That is a fact, and nobody with any sense would dispute that.
This season, although LSU plays both Florida and UGA (and Auburn, if you think they're top 10 material: I don't) the fact is that the OOC schedule is a flat out joke.
That spade is exactly that, a spade.
Overall, I think it evens out. In the end though, to be honest, I don't think it'll matter. LSU will trounce the OOC rent-a-wins and probably lose two conference games. I think that'll be enough for LSU to win the SEC West but I don't think the Tigers will win the conference. Too much to ask to beat either UGA or (more likely) UF this season.
bla bla bla

Question: What would you like LSU to do, play the toughest in-conference schedule in the nation and a tough out-of-conference schedule as well? Would that change our spade-ness into something like a diamond in your eyes?
You miss the point entirely.

Bottom line:
The fans don't make the schedule so to hold LSU fans responsible b/c of the Athletic Dept is bs
Its well known that LSU fans want a tough OCC schedule and they voice their displeasure to the AD when they don't get it....just ask Joe Alleva

Who is holding them responsible? Like I said before. I only point out the OOC schedules when someone says LSU consistently plays tough OOC opponents.

The Trojan trolls are using our OOC schedule to deflect attention away from how pathetic their Pac-10 schedule is in comparison to our "damn strong" SEC schedule.
We can't argue that our OOC schedule isn't weak this year, and they can't argue that their Pac-10 schedules aren't weak every year in comparison to our SEC schedules.

the fact is that every team including sc and lsu play a tough enough schedule to compete for the national champ. usc must play a tougher ooc bc if not they wouldnt have a hih enough power ranking to make bcs and lsu plays what they need ooc which is not as tough bc we usually play 5 to 6 ranked teams. there is no argument! what i said is a fact! if sc played in sec they would play ooc exactly like all sec teams do. the fact is we made bcs final 2 with 2 losses with our schedule the way it was last year as well with 1 loss in 2003. we must know what we are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think any USC or PAC-10 fan would argue that a PAC-10 schedule is stronger than a PAC-10 schedule. It is you who seem to either be deflecting to avoid the point or missing the point altogether.

Don't worry, this is not the TROJAN FOOTBALL FORUM where you get accused and blacklisted for being too frank and honest about the facts.

The BOTTOM line is who plays more TOP 25 teams on a more consistent basis?
It's not even close.....
Now go away and lose to another sorry arse and unrated Pac 10 team.

OK let USC (socal) play Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Georgia AND LSU and see how they do. I think the Trojans are and have been a great college program and they have at times played toughter OOC schedules. But come on, No Team wants a home and home against LSU. Just ask Colorado & Virginia Tech. I hope LSU and USC play for the Crystal Ball. And moreover I hope they play the game in Pasadena so the USC fans can't bitch about home field advantage. Besides, I know some great people in Cali and go out as often as possible. Great State, beautiful country and high energy cities. LSU vs. USC in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship would IMO be awesome.
