we have to be top 10 in the nation in defensive categories for our defense to be considered good?

26th in total defense
Compared to what? 50-something last year? We were improved, especially in scoring defense.

we weren't top 10 in any defensive category i could find
We are close in scoring D at #12. The difference between us and #10 Iowa is half a point per game.
That's pretty good.

D was filled with veterans
Many of the guys you listed had the best year of their careers under Chavis' coaching, including:

Would have been a top-10 defense if we had a decent DL. They were great in the redzone though

I was not all that impressed with Chavis' bend but dont break philosophy. It is fine if we have a good offense but with an inept offense it was a disaster. It would be good to have a defense that can actually force a punt instead of letting the other team run all over us till the RZ.
But statistically the 2008 offense averaged 10 plays per game more than the putrid 2009 offense and was on the field for a considerably longer time.
Even without the pick 6's last year's D gave up more points than this years.
So I guess it was improved over last year. Miles wants a conservative guy on D and that is what he got. Chavis is not gonna change his philosophy to Sabanesque any time soon.

Some aspects were better and some were the same. Overall I'd say we improved, but there is a lot of room for more improvement.

the defense didn't cost us 4 games, that's all that matters. and it's not like chavis was going to fix everything his first year. go back and look at the texas defense last year, now they are one of the best in the country. i think the defense will be very good next year.

Not dynamic enough. need to get more turnovers and sacks. There aren't really that many elite shutdown defenses anymore due to high octane offenses. You need a D than can sack the QB and take the ball away.
Even bama is going to get toasted sometimes. They are good because they get to the QB and stop drives the old fashion way. Its tough to convert 2nd and 21's adn 3rd and 15's.

I was fairly happy with it.
Most of those guys were solid players, but nothing special. Hawkins split time most of the year. Woods was a bust of epic proportions(Can we say that now?), Alexander was quite good but the injuries have taken a toll on him, Alem...I don't even know what to say about him. He's a good pass rusher, but you never see it for an entire game. He gets held quite a bit, but he struggled against the run all year again. Jones, Sheppard, and Riley were the glue of our defense. All three had their moments for us this year.

Who honestly believes our defense was "fixed" this year?
2008:
Ranked 32 in Total Defense. Gave up 4232 yards. 5.0 yds per play, 325.5 yds game.
2009:
Ranked tied for 27 in Total Defense. Gave up 4259 yards. 4.7 yds per play, 327.6 yds per game.

HOLY shite!!! for real?

compared to where we started the year we definitely improved. i went to our first game in WA and a couple of homers later in the year and the improvement was noticeable. we are not there yet, but if the trend continues next season then our D will finish in the top 10. I'll take that.
i'm more concerned about our O. a lot more concerned.

quote:Yes, see my post from yesterday with link to stats. LINK Once you look at statistics, its clear that our defense was about the same as last year statistically. What did improve from last year was lack of confusion and substituitions problems on D.

this will improve, thus rush defense improves, and the rest will follow.
Who honestly goes through their entire life with zero positivity?

So we have Levingston, Davenport, Downs, Nevis, and Montegomery as either big time recruits and/or experienced vets. I am hoping to see a huge jump in year 2 of Chavis DL. Also Haley deserves a second year to improve the DL.

Who were not recruited to play the scheme of Chavis. Give him a couple of years to plug in the type of linemen he prefers and the scoring D will be top ten year after year IMO. Hell it would have been this season with even a mediorcre effort by the offense. Big, nasty dlinemen who get a push without much blitzing help were what Chief had in his best years at UT. I've got a feeling some are on the way. Check out the recruiting board if you haven't lately.

I thought they played with a lot of courage in the Cap One Bowl, esp when the offense kept giving PSU the ball in our territory.
Posted on 1/7/10 at 12:57 pm to SlowFlowPro
I think it was at least mended adequately enough to make a big time BCS bowl game. 95% of the problems this team had was on the offensive side of the ball. Now the D-line was one of the worst ive seen at LSU in a long long time. Woods and Alem are not LSU quality D-lineman imho. They both get themselves out of position Waaaay too often. But im looking forward to seeing Edwards, Nevis, Downs, Aghayere, Montgomery, and even Brockers...and hopefully Davenport.
Chavis employs a Monte Kiffen style defense that is bend but dont break. Its not for some people who want constant pressure and risk/reward type of defense..but both can be successful. Finishing 12th in scoring is damn good for his first year with a pretty bad d-line and zero offense to keep them off the field now and then.
I give Chavis a B+ at least.
