Significantly improved but not fixed. Since we had a dominant defense as recently as the first half of the 2007 season - and certainly in 2006 - "fixed," to me, means a return to dominance.

"I don't think our talent level was that much inferior to '03's"

I strongly disagree with this statement as it pertains to the DL.

Chavis employs a Monte Kiffen style defense that is bend but dont break.

no he doesnt...Kiffen was one of top blitzing DC's in NFL...Kiffen uses his D-line to stunt and slant causing opposing teams O-line to miss blocking assignments...

Well..alot of that has to do with personnel. But the Tampa 2 defense relies heavily on the back 7 just like Chavis does...at least with the d-line he had.

quote:

# eed over size and strength. Coordinators that employ Kiffin-style defenses will often replace linebackers with safeties and linemen with linebackers in order to put more speed on the field, an approach known as spinning down. In particular, linebackers must be able to cover receivers; in the Tampa 2 scheme, one linebacker frequently drops back deep into coverage, turning what looks like a Cover 2 defense into a Cover 3. Kiffin's defenses also employ large but quick defensive/nose tackles as run-stoppers. # Preventing scores over preventing yardage. A Kiffin coordinator doesn't care how many yards an offense gains, as long as the team doesn't score, an approach known as bend-but-don't-break. # Multiple defenses from one look. Kiffin-style defenses try to use the same personnel (or the same kind of personnel) at all times, so that the offense cannot adjust its play call based on the alignment of the defensive personnel. # Attacking and causing turnovers. Kiffin-style defenses focus on getting the ball away from the offense by stripping the ball away from the ball carrier or reading the quarterback to make an interception. The risk is that if the ball is not stripped or intercepted, then the ball carrier on offense has a better chance of gaining more yards or scoring; the reward is that the offensive drive is stopped without a score more often, frequently giving good field position.

That kinda sounds like Chavis also..

i stand corrected, But I know he used his d-line to slant and stunt vs FL and sacked Tebow like 4 times...I thought I remember LB Brooks at Tampa leading the league in sacks years ago...guess it was Int's...
anyway, still dont like it...I like the risk vs. reward Blitzing, man coverage Belichick/Saban big balls or go home MAN D!!! ARGHHH

I like that style also FWIW...but I think Chavis will be more aggressive with our new DL next year. Both Nevis and Downs are tough to block 1 on 1...and Edwards will be tough on the end. When an O-line cant count on blocking D-lineman 1 on 1...you can risk blitzing way more often. How often were our blitzes successful this year? Cause we did blitz some. Want a hint?

they actually keep that category? Cause im guessing they were close to #7 in # of defensive plays....and also close to #7 in amount of time defense was on the field...

...well..it was a rhetorical "want a hint?"...but it wasnt often. I DVR all the games and transfer to disc. So one of these days ill go thru the defensive plays and actually tally the successful blitzes...ie Sacks, hurried throws, or stuffed runs...and post it. But i watch and re-watch all the games (ya im married and have no life) and we definately were not good at getting pressure on the QB when we blitzed.

I think the defense improved in that it became somewhat organized and is a defense that won't win you games, but 9 out of 10 times won't lose you games.

That said, no one has yet explained to me how Chavis has magically had his best 3 years defensively when his team's offenses are utterly shitty, yet when they have good offenses its average at best. I find that very ironic.

Chavis' defense played fundamentally sound defense this season, which is exactly what we needed. It is a work in progress.

This defense performed above average this season and we should reasonably expect it to only get better.

Plus as far as points allowed per game:

2003 = 11
2007 = 19.9
2008 = 24.2
2009 = 16.2

I would say that we are improving very much so on defense

the problem was our scoring per game

2003 = 33.9
2007 = 38.7
2008 = 30.9
2009 = 24.8

we weren't bad by any means, but we were 26th in total defense

I don't think our defense was fixed but it was leaps and bounds better than it was the last year. I really feel the CO-DC travesty set the defense back a couple of years. Chavis had to essentially start from scratch...

I think Chavis did a good job and tremendously improved our defensive unit. They kept us in every game this season and also basically won a few for us bc of how bad the offense was.

Agree sort of. I too think the '03 DL was better. But most of that difference wasn't due to raw talent but to coaching and schemes. If you our DL and air-dropped them into say Muschamp or Saban or TCU my guess is they would be much more productive.

at the end of the game yards, 3rd conversions, time of position, none of that really matters it is all about the score...i don't care if the other team has 600 yards and we only have 200 all long as we have more points then they do...an effective defense is one that keeps the opposing teams score low and gives us the chance to score more points

i thought the defense was a lot better than last year. look at the amount of time they stayed on the field because our own offense could hold on to the ball.

no question our D is improving and i agree with Chavis starting from scratch basically. i'm not the most optimistic tigerfan right now (will change if Crowton leaves), but i'm optimistic about where our D is going. i would love to see more aggression (the good ole days), but compared to 2008 and even the beginning of this past season we are getting better. overall Chavis has had a positive impact on our D. the few games where they ran the ball up the gut on us turned my stomach though. can't fault the redzone defense, however.
