I remember watching games when Bo Rein coached at N.C. State and they were not a 3 yard and cloud of dust. I remember them moving the ball with great efficiency both running and throwing. After watching him coach I was ready for him to come to LSU and coach. It is hard to tell what he could have done with Hilliard and James in the same backfield.

to add to the story bammertiger, the air force actually picked up the plane over the atlantic and did several observation fly-bys and reported that the pilot and a passenger were in their seats and looked "asleep". they stayed with the plane until it ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean. there was not an attempt to recover the plane due to the depth of the atlantic. the plane was owned by Nichols Construction Co. of Baton Rouge and on loan (along with the pilot) to LSU. the plane was new and appearantly the oxygen system malfunctioned. it was very sad. LSU did pay for the Rein childrens college although i am not sure where they went to school.

Very sad day. Still remember it. I was so excited that someone with my last name was going to be the coach. Shame he never got the chance. Might have had a little more bowl success in the early 80s.

It happened during my second semester as a freshman at LSU. Man , I remember it all too well. No one really wanted to pull the trigger on Coach Mac, (who eventhough had a conservative philosophy, was a good coach that just coulnt ever beat the Bear but who could in those days). Anyway the BOS brought in Paul Dietzel to do the job and right before the MSU game in 1979, it is announced that Mac's contract will not be renewed. Of course we go to Memorial Stadium in Jackson, MS which in those days is where we played Ole miss and Msu and lay an egg and lose to Miss St in a game that had the boys had their hearts into it , we could have easily won. then the Hiring of Bo Rein and the following tragedy. Dietzel then had no choice but to promote Stovall from Mac's staff. I always wondered what LSU had become if not for the untimely and tragic death of Bo Rein.

Between losing Bo Rein, although LSU did I believe retain one or two(?) of his NC State coaches on the staff under Stovall..
When Cholly Mac was "retiring", where Bobby Bowden won in BR, after making that decision that whomever won that game, was whom he was was gonna coach(ironically LSU beat FSU in a return trip to BR a few years later to go to Orange Bowl)..
And LSU's Dean/BOS/BigWigs passing over SOS and Shanahan for Archer or Rutigliano..
Those were the three big bad-beats that could've shaped LSU Football positively for decades, yet never came to pass.
In which, Coach Stovall had two good years & two bad ones alternating AC/DC all four, with Brodhead's procuring of Arnsparger's small great four year tenure, and his roster left over that won big for his disciple Archer that first year of his small tenure, then brutal pain until Dinardo's three steps forward, then two steps back.
Comprising the best ten seasons of LSU Football for the entire 80s and 90s two decade span.

Rein was on his way from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. The airplane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina. Nobody knows what happened. Turner Industries owned the plane and contrary to generally established procedure the FAA did not share information with the owner. Bert Turner finally hired private investigators to find out for himself what had happened. I don't know what the investigators told him.
ETA: The plane had flown through a military identification zone and did not respond. Military jets were sent to intercept it and the pilots saw no sign of life in the Turner airplane. They stayed with it until it ran out of fuel and watched it crash. It is so deep that no efforts were ever made to recover it.

I remember that day and Bo Rein very well too. Bo was also the OC for Lou Holtz for a short time at Arkansas. Ran the veer, i believe Rein was the OC when Ark upset Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl in 77 or 78.
