LSU - are you kidding me. I'm very happy for the Saints and pull for them to win but if we're talking real fans, it's LSU in a landslide.

why is this a terrible thread?
Apparently you miss alot that's posted on here.

Im sure as far as being a casual fan for the most part they are one in the same.
I live and breath LSU football, If I catch the sanits on sunday fine, if not Ill find out the score on espn or the paper the next day.
FWIW I couldnt tell who the saints play from week to week, whereas I have LSU shcedule memorizied.

Im just a much bigger fan of college football than the NFL.

LSU has been in existence since ~1860. Since that time, there have been graduates of the school every year. I think it would be safe to say that most if not every one of the LSU graduates considers himself an LSU fan. Aside from the alumni, you have those people that grew up in the state that may or may not have gone to another school, but are LSU fans. So, over the course of 100+ years, you have a fanbase built of alumni and non/alumni (which some alumni are fans of other NFL teams other than the Saints).

It's not even close. There are probably 3 times more LSU fans than there are Saints fans. Think of all the LSU fans that live in other states and even other countries of the world.

"Faulk said there is "no comparison" between this year's sales and those from the Saints' most recent playoff run in 2006.

'The vendors are just blown away,' she said. "They've never seen this much activity out of Louisiana."

But, most Ole Miss, USM, MSU fans are also fans of the Saints, and the fans of those schools easily outnumber us LSU fans in Mississippi. The Saints are enormously popular in Mississippi, have been for as long as they have been in New Orleans. But it is much stronger this year.

The biggest difference is the depth of the "fandom." Most fans of a college team feel a much stronger allegiance to the college team than their favorite pro team. The Saints have many casual fans- glad they are doing well, following them closely this year because they are successful. In prior years, they wished the Saint well, followed them less closely. (That pretty much describes me. I am very happy for the Saints and following them very closely this season, but I have nowhere the depth of interest that I have in LSU on a season by season basis.)

Shreveport has an affintiy for the Cowboys for a couple of reasons- proximity (closer to Dallas than New Orleans and easier to get there); history of the Cowboys compared to the Saints- people want to back a winner), and the Cowboys have been around longer, older fans were fans of the Cowboys before the Saints team came to N.O.

In Northeast Louisiana, the Cowboys have had a pretty strong following, but more because of the success of the franchise. I think most feel a natural affinity for the Saints, but have been frustrated over the years by lack of success. When the Saints are winning, people are more pro-Saints than pro-Cowboy.

LSU by far.... everywhere you go in Louisiana you see LSU stuff, the same cant be said for the saints. Its like that for any state with a pro team and a big college team though....

The Saints are loved throughout the gulf coast region and have a ton of fan support nationally. People up here love the Saints. I'm sure the Seahawks being terrible plays into that

based on my experience of watching games at LSU and Saints bars in cities outside of Louisiana in various regions it's LSU by far based on the turnout for each team's games.

I am wondering whether tomorrow the Saints would win this argument. I am in Dallas and I wore a Saints t-shirt to work today. You would not believe how many people at the office and at lunch have said they are cheering for the Saints.

While yes they may be pulling for the Saints, this does not mean that they may be fans. They may be Texans fans... Houston won't be in the playoffs so they pull for the Saints for their dislike for the Cowboys. Many NFL fans of other teams will pull for a team other than their own when their team is in a different conference or their team is out of the playoffs. This does not per say make them a fan. SO i will say LSU by far.
