To us old timers Ole Miss is and will always be LSU's biggest rival. I remember living on campus during Ole Miss week and the trash cans being set on fire during the night along with the panty raids. Ole Miss cost us a shot at the NC during the '69 season along with appearing in a major bowl
+1. It's Ole Miss for anyone who was at LSU before the late 1970s. Prior to Tulane's deemphasis on football, Tulane and Ole Miss were perhaps on equal footing as rivals, but even by the late 1960s, and certainly by the 1970s, Tulane was regarded as more of an nuisance (even if they won an occasional game) than a real rival. Nothing ignited the passions of the students on campus like Ole Miss week. Tulane week was nothing in comparison. The "Go to Hell Ole Miss" chant by fans (students and nonstudents alike) followed the end of every home game before the Ole Miss game. That changed as both teams struggled through the 80s and 90s, but it still has the greatest potential as our major rivalry.
Ole Miss fans seem to regard LSU as their great rival as well. They certainly have a big rivalry with MSU, but it is different from their rivalry with LSU in feel. (They seem to feel about MSU like many LSU fans now feel about Ole Miss, regarding them with little respect as a real threat to their football ambitions but "hated" nonetheless.)

A rivalry that is not mutual is really no rivalry at all. Even in the 50's 60's & 70's, the Tulane-LSU football series mattered more to the old timers in New Orleans than anyone else. There was an organization of LSU and Tulane backers that staged wheelbarrow rides (victor pushed around by loser) near Norby's uptown bar. It (the "rivalry" and the football series) was a pretty big deal until the early 80's.

The two main contributors to the major national rivalries are:
1) In-state foes
2) The two main conference competitors
See: UCLA/USC, OSU/Mich, UF/FSU, Ala/Aub, UGA/GT, FSU/Miami, Tx/OU
LSU suffers (thankfully) for not having another major college program in the state. Tulane, Tech, the UL system, although marginally competitive in their own conferences from time to time, do not pose either a recruiting threat or threat of beating LSU. So, the in-state rivalry doesn't work for LSU.
Secondly, the major SEC competitors (UF, UGA, Ala, Aub, Tenn... sometimes Ark) either have their own rivalry established or don't have much history with LSU.
Arkansas has been a pain in LSU's side recently, and who knows what they can do under their new coach. With the last game of the year always being Ark, they can quickly become hated to the point of a rival if they continue to spoil our chances for a NC.
Ole Miss suffers from being irrelevant until as of late. Although they may beat us, rarely are they in the discussion for actually winning the SEC. So, that is one of the main reasons why the Ole Miss rivalry has died down from the intensity in the 60's/70's, but they both really hate the arrogance of each other. If Ole Miss re-establishes (I mean establishes itself for the first time) as a legitimate SEC contender, I think it would be hard to see any other team being a better rival for LSU.

I think LSU fans biggest rivals are other LSU fans, except on game day. Until then, we bitch like sibling rivalry!

In my days at LSU during the 80's, it was and will always be TULANE! We HATED Tulane! I was at an LSU-Tulane FIGHT and a Football Game Broke out! It was the only time I ever remember seeing a game called before the end b/c of a fight. Tommy Clapp (followed by the Louisiana State Police) ran to the Tulane sidelines and body slammed a player from NO. Unless you were a student then you will never know what it was like to be in that section that night. That week, we burned crap every night that resembled Tulane. Just thinking about the crap that always went down DURING the games in the stands makes me want to beat the shite out of someone. There were no less than 12 people kick out on SEPARATE occasions for fighting in my section that game. It ws awesome.

Times have changed and not only is Arkansas an SEC team now. But, they have been a thorn in our arse and we now actually play them on rivalry weekend. Arkansas is LSU's arch rival.

Fox sports said it is Tulane. wtf. We play Arkansas during rivalry weekend, maybe it's them now.
we dont have one, however if we continue to win more than we lose against bama, and auburn stays down as a program I think it will become bama

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this statement. But, no, Arkansas is not now and never will be LSU's arch rival. It doesn't matter what weekend we play. The whole "rivalry week" is nothing more than a media creation. It has nothing whatsoever to do with creating a rivalry where none has existed before.

Dislike Arky, but not sure if they are a Rival. Gotta say though. Houston Nutt should have been our coach b/c lord knows we have struggled against our teams. Call this Germans, but you all know when Saban left he recommended Nutt for the job.. So now it is Ole Piss again from an SEC perspective. Still dislike Tulane the most.

I wish bama wasn't our rival. If I could change history, I would want the LSU Fighting Tigers to be our main rival.

Florida has been our biggest game of the season for the past few years, but I dont really know if i would consider them the "enemy" Aside from when they are playing LSU I actually like Florida. Can't say the same for BAMA, UGA, OLE piss, arky etc..

If you aren't sure that someone is your rival, then they aren't.
I am one who is grateful that we didn't get Houston Nutt. He is a good coach but he never has put it all together, even though he has managed to win some games against LSU that he probably shouldn't have won. I don't think he would be a good fit at LSU. Whatever you think of the debacle with the fans in Arkansas, the Malzahn (sp?) controversy, etc., some of the blame has be laid at Nutt's feet for not managing the situation better. I am glad that LSU didn't follow Saban's recommendation. I would much rather have Miles.
I agree that Ole Miss is our SEC rival. Tulane seems to matter primarily to LSU alums from New Orleans (which is natural) and since it appears that we won't be playing them annually in the long run, that rivalry, if it already hasn't been kaput for quite a few years, is pretty much dead and won't be resurrected.

yeah for me it's Ole Miss, but i know it differs for others. Why Ole Miss?
1. old historical rival
2. SEC West Foe
3. Close proximity relative to other SEC schools
4. they are insufferable douchebags
5. It makes their season if they beat LSU
6 Miss. State has virtually no history, and the Ole Miss-MSU rivalry seems to lack the heat of some of the other big time SEC rivalries. Thus, Ole Miss doesn't have a rival that clearly trumps LSU. The same can't be said for Bama, AU, FLA, etc.
7. Play them every year.
