re: Why did Les Miles get so much hate for 1/9/12?

If we'd given it our all and lost no one would have a problem with losing. It was that we banged our head against a wall for 4 quarters and expected it to suddenly work. Once plan A didn't work, plan B was "see plan A".

Miles deserves the heat mainly IMO for not starting Mett to begin the year. His play in 2012/2013 proves he was obviously the best option.
Am I saying Mett would’ve beaten Bama on 1/9? No. But we might have had the 2013 version of Mett in 2012 if he would’ve been able to take his lumps and improve in 2011.

I remember watching that game and i was only 13 years old. I kept screaming to the TV saying take Jordan Jefferson out. They kept running into 8 man fronts and would not switch it up whatsoever. I didn’t hate him for it but I definitely knew that we lost because of bad coaching. I was more upset that Alabama got there in the first place.

Very true. Kirby Smart visited Greg Williams, the Saints DC at the time and they widened out their D-Line to adjust.

Honestly, Jarrett Lee would have been worse.
His career number VS Bama are beyond atrocious. He has like a 1/7 TD:INT. ratio

We don’t win the first game if Lee stayed in. Good guy, just shite his pants under pressure.

He should've been canned after the game.

IMO the game plan that was used in Tuscalooser won LSU the game. The speed option plays that we ran in the 2nd half, Bama had no answer for.
That said, anyone with a brain knew that Saban would be totally prepared for that. Not only did Miles not change, he didn't even add any wrinkles to it.
Jet Sweep
Jet Sweep Option
Jet Sweep Play Action
If he had just added these wrinkles, at least it might have given Bama something else to think about. We literally ran the exact same plays from the first matchup. Not gonna work against anyone, let alone Saban.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, could've led that LSU team to a win against Alabama on 1/9, not even a Nick Saban clone
Could someone else have gotten past midfield?
And screw you! There were plenty of things Les could have done in preparation for the game and adjustments during the game that could have made a difference.
The Damn score was only 12-0 with 23 seconds left in the third quarter!
The fact he did nothing is what sealed his fate to most LSU fans like me.

WTF? Have you lost your mind? Did you not see the Offensive game plan? Did you not see the inability or arrogance to not even make in game / half time adjustments? That was 100% on Miles! I cant guarantee a win, but any other coach would have gone in that game with a better game plan! Even bama players and coaches are quoted as saying they were surprised by the simplistic game plan and not one adjustment made by LSU. GTFO with this nonsense. The hate for Miles on that game is warranted. You don't go into a rematch, any rematch, especially the National Fn Championship with a fk it attitude.

We exhausted our load in the Game of the Century
So Bama didn't exhaust their load? They prepared, made adjustments and got better! You're a retard

Our greatest team ever's fate was sealed the moment Jeff Woody walked into the endzone in 2OT on November 18, 2011. It's horribly unfair, but it's the way things turned out.
Holy F'n shite!

THIS! The man sat on the sidelines waiting for a fumble, interception, broken play to break momentum. Basically have some unplanned play happen to bail them out, just like in every game after the first game with Bama and he gave full reigns to Jefferson. Benching Lee and giving full reigns to Jefferson messed up the offensive rhythm, LSU became one dimensional. The games after GoC showed this! But Defensive and SP Td blow momentum LSU way. Miles relied on this.

The 2011 LSU team were SEC champs which they deserve credit for but stop this “might have been” greatest team of all time talk nonsense. They were a typical Les Miles type team, great defense but poor offense when it mattered the most. Let’s just look at some facts here. Before you start hyping up Bama let’s look at how other teams performed vs that same 2011 Bama team.
Here is a list of teams that scored more points vs Bama in 2011 than LSU did in the national championship game:
1. A 2-10 Ole Miss team was able to score more points vs Bama. That is right. A 2-10 team has a better offensive performance vs Bama than LSU.
2. Georgia Southern Yep, a division 1-AA school put up 21 points vs Bama. In fact Southern Georgia scored mored points vs Bama in just 2 quarters (14 points) than LSU did in 8 quarters of play vs Bama.
3. Kent State. They scored 7 points. LSU could not cross midfield.
4. Tennessee. A 7 loss Vol team put up more points than LSU did.
5. Mississippi State. A 6 loss MSU team did better than LSU.
6. Penn State, with 4 losses that year.
7. Auburn, with 5 losses that year.
8. Florida, with 6 losses that year.
9. Arkansas, with 2 losses that year.
In fact the 2011 Bama team only had three shutouts all year:
1. 5-7 North Texas was shut out.
2. 6-7 Vanderbilt was shut out.
3. 13-1 LSU was shut out.
Let’s look at just a few other team’s first downs vs Bama in 2011 compared to LSU’s national championship game performance.
LSU= 5 (fewest 1st downs vs Bama for their entire season)
Georgia Southern= 14
Ole Miss= 9
North Texas= 11
Vanderbilt= 8
Total yards vs Bama=
LSU= 92 (fewest yards vs Bama’s D for the entire year)
Georgia Southern= 341
Ole Miss= 141
North Texas= 169
Vanderbilt= 190
So to sum up yardage and first downs: A 5-7 North Texas team, 7 loss Vanderbilt team, 2-10 Ole Miss team, and a freaking 1-AA school had nearly double the yardage and first downs than LSU could muster vs Bama in the national championship game.
I would not even rank the 2011 team as a top 5 LSU team all time and none of my top five all time LSU teams would ever get out performed by a 2-10 team in the biggest game of the year.

I was somewhat with you, until this. Don't be a ridiculous stat guy. Comparing stats of Kent State in a mid October game, where LSU or Bama can go through the motions and win to the National Championship, is borderline retarded. Don't go full retard.

It was more than just that game. Jarret Lee truly got us there. He should NEVER had been benched. The team was on a roll.. they believed in Jarret Lee, when CLM put Jefferson as starter.... it disrupted the Offense. There was enough talent all around (especially on Defense) to make up for it. But we lost the passing attack, which left us one dimensional. EVERYONE knew Jefferson couldn't think past the first read.
Then again, we never should have played Bama. We were Conference champs, Bama wasn't. Plus, we had already beat them once. They were a great team, with a great coach, tough to beat em twice... especially with a lacking qb.

What a flashback this thread is.
And yes, Les Miles had no clue what was going on during that game, like most games.

This is my issue as well. He stayed with what wasn't working the entire game. I'll always love that season but he stuck to the gameplan and refused to deviate from it.
Ironically, this is exactly what got him fired a few years later.
Did Lee frick Les's daughter or something? I vaguely remember Les sending him in for one play during the SEC Championship game - to kneel the ball

We'll never know for sure, but Les certainly had a hard on for JJ and a dislike of JL.

Just look at the yardage he could have gained if he just kept the balloon and ran right......
