Haven't sifted thru the thread, so this is probably a restatement, but I've seen it happen.
For example, a layoff in your early 60's can make hiring into a comparable position difficult. Health issues can have the same effect. If you are not in a good position at that point, it can be brutal.

I'm shooting for 62 right now. I might try to scale back my lifestyle so I can retire in my 50s. I really don't like working.

It is dumb, but it happens all the time. In very large corporations the decisions about what employees stay and who goes are often made by people looking strictly at the salary and compensation line, and have no knowledge of what the employee does and what is required to replace there skill set, it is strictly what do they cost at that moment in time.
