Believe it or not, it actually happens a lot in more rural parishes where there are a lot of intra-family transactions for low values. It's low hanging fruit for small town attorneys when families get pissed off about "unfair" divestiture of assets.

OP, a lot of people in here have already mentioned that the lifelock type of crap you're seeing commercials for is a scam, but another thing to consider is this: if you already purchased title insurance when you purchased your house (which most people do), then even if the lifelock stuff isn't a scam, it is at best redundant to purchase on top of the title insurance you already have.

There were only two sellers of the property before me. I also only plan on being here for less than five years. So the odds of needing the insurance while I am here was too low to justify coming out of pocket an extra $800.

You might be right, and certainly in a lot of circumstances the risks are very low. But FYI, the title insurance protects you even after you sell.

For example, if you sell, and a few years down the road the person you sold to runs into a title issue that they think you intentionally hid from them and they sue you, you would still be protected. That's not a high likelihood either, but just food for thought.
