People who can't afford it, or that was the original intent. It was always a tax, with disproportionate payouts, not a savings scheme. There was generational income redistribution going on when he was paying in, just as there is now.
The fact is that this seems like you are trying avoid paying, what technically you are required by law to pay. And that is cheating.
and technically medicare is welfare.
I will let you do the math.

Another illustration of what is wrong with people in this country. Many would view this as a great opportunity to move their parents into a very good facility instead of calling it a f'n debacle. I can not stand this mindset.

Thanks to the money he has already paid he is in the best facility in the area already.

Or allow them to move back in their house, with the extra money paying for private home health aids/nursing/therapy.

If they are able to do that then that is a definite possibility.

Again, he has already paid thousands. He will be paying a shitload more in one of two ways:
1. The sale of his land and home
2. The leasing of his land to the Haynesville Shale

So if he's paying for it all himself, why does it matter if he sells it or not?

But you said Medicare is currently paying for everything?

Because he has already paid with all the money he had to his name other than his home, which is perfectly legal to keep.

why dont you quit being a bitch trying to keep your inheritance and have some family values and not put your grandparents in a nursing home? that would get rid of the need for them to pay the nursing home and you wouldnt have to cheat the government anymore

1. They have been in a rehabilitation program which is only offered where they are currently at. They need to be in the rehabilitation program which they are currently in.
2. Nobody has cheated the government on anything. They have paid for their health care with every bit of money they've had other than their home.

Good luck on your "fricking the rest of us" endeavor.

Stewart,
I may have this incorrect and probably do. But, if your relatives continue to incur medical expenses at the facility where they reside, and then they pass away, does the ownership of the family home go to the state of Louisiana as reimbursement of their care and medical expenses in some way? If that would be the case, then the State would be getting royalties for many years to come and for far more than cost of the medical care. Do I have it screwed up?

I think you can sell the property but keep the mineral rights for 10 years before they revert to the property owner. Get a good lawyer though, there might be capital gains and such to think about.

Geez, how much does it cost to put up somebody in a nursing home these days? That isn't much of a life anyways. I would hate to be such a burden on my future kids and grandkids some day if I was bed ridden like that. I'd just tell my kids to take me out back and shoot me before it got that bad.

My suggestion is for him to get off the public teat.

My grandparents have only been on the "public teat" as you call it after they have spent every dollar to their name other than their home...which is perfectly fine to keep.

How so? The selling of his property would generate my grandpa and grandma 100+ grand. That's more than enough to take care of them in the nursing home along with the large amount they have paid already.

Then sale it and get them off my tax dollars.
I don't want to help support someone who worked hard their whole life, I would rather they be going to a good dead beat who can't wait for Obama to get elected!
