Well I was able to get my policy through State Farm, 98.79 a month,,
150,000 Dwelling
93,750 Personal Items
1000,000 Liability
1,000 Medical Payments
1% non hurricane deductible
2% hurricane deductible
5% hurricane deductible if I ever move my car policies

That is a truly scummy move on State Farm's part.

Welcome to the fiasco that is homeowner's insurance in S. La.
I'm losing insurance on my house in New Orleans (and having to buy worthless yet horribly overpriced Citizens) due to the fact that it has not been renovated since Katrina BECAUSE IT WAS COMPLETELY UNSCATHED BY KATRINA!!!!

You're never stuck with an insurance company - if you can find a better policy elsewhere, you can cancel insurance any time you want.

and take a short rate cancellation and lose money
Posted on 7/7/09 at 9:54 pm to tiger9876
Not for me - I pay it all in advance.

All homeowners policies in LA (or at least with respectable companies) should have a prorated refund.

I'm almost positive this is legally required.

Pretty sure it is required by the Ins. Commissioner.

It's not a scummy move, it encourages you to keep your business with SF and rewards good customers. He is still getting a better non hurricane deductible than the two who had a 2% with AF. Also, if he wanted to pay a little more he could have %1/2 deductible.

Are you his agent? Pretty interesting that you know so much about his policy.
Forcing a good customer to suffer a 5% deductible simply for choosing auto insurance elsewhere is your idea of a reward?

No, I'm not his agent. I do however work for State Farm and it is a company policy not a agent policy. I was just trying to give you insight why they do it that way. Fwiw if he is classified in mutual his car insurance is probably cheaper than anywhere else. Most "good" agents won't write a homeowner's policy without having your vehicles with them because it's not in the best interest of his customer.

I use to work in Auto-Claims for State Farm. I however had no knowledge of Home-Owners Insurance, so I understand its a good move on their part to get the bulk of my business and they do offer me a discount. The only thing I don't like about the Farm is that they don't offer cash back for good driving records. Like All State

They don't actually give you cash back but they do give you a discount on your premium for good driving and every year accident free. Also, if you get a State Farm credit card you can earn points towards your premium. I know some people who use the credit card the whole month and it pays their premium. I know not everyone can financially do this but for some it's a pretty good deal. How was working claims? Claims Adjuster seems like it would be a pretty cool job.

Seems this should be a two way street, though, doesn't it?
I've got auto insurance with State Farm but they WON'T write me a homeownser's policy.

Not true, rates vary for customers. In some cases a customer can have their autos here and their homeowners somewhere else and still get a better rate on auto insurance than they would anywhere else but if you don't have autos here and you get a %5 hurricane deductible it would be in your best interest to find somewhere with a lower deductible. At least that's what I would do. I don't know your situation but for the last three months when we were open to write homeowners I was calling everyone to give quotes and no one was interested. Now that we are writing on a limited basis everyone wants homeowners insurance. I guess it's because hurricane season is approaching but sometimes if you wait to the last minute there is nothing we can do. If you really want SF homeowners I suggest calling your agent and asking him to notify you if a spot opens up. Usually when someone drops coverage they will be allowed to replace that with a new policy.

When you guys talk about "New Orleans" what parishes are included? Does that go all the way up the river?
