Interesting... a few more 'yeahs' than I expected I think.

I just wrote the largest tithe check I've ever written. Started awhile back and as my financial situation has turned around for the better I can say that it has been real exciting to do.

I would estimate that we run about 15% tithes, other offerings and direct charitable giving. Each one comes with it's own real satisfaction when given...

Previously we just gave direct charitable stuff and probably ran about only 3% of income.

I still donate to random charities I want to support and plan on doing so to a greater extent when I am actually making a salary, FWIW.

Sorry I meant these three added together.

Don't make it a point to tithe. We do however donate to charities and things that we research very well on a regular basis. I will say its a very satisfying feeling.

We tithe.
Everyone can do what they want, but I will share with you what I believe.
I believe everything comes from God. God asks us to return 1 out of 10 to Him through the Church.
The last thing I want to do is spend the portion God has requested. I do not want to go there.
Also, almsgiving occurs after the tithe has been giving. If a person does not tithe, then they will never get into almsgiving.
Almsgiving greatly pleases God.

Give to God what is God's, and give to ceasar what is ceasar's. Since all things come from God, all things belong to God. Tithing is merely giving to God what is already His. We are supposed to be good stewards over whatever God gives us, and we are supposed return to God 1 out of 10, that is how to tithe.

The belief is that God blesses us with being able to do more with the 90% versus the 100%.
I have experienced this personally.
We are on course to pay off our house in 14 months, and we tithe. Everything else we have is completely paid for such as our cars, no student loans, no home equity loan, no credit card debt, etc. No debt and we will be very close to paying off our house at the end of 2011.
Our combined salary is less than 6 figures a year, so we don't have large income per year. We have done more with the 90% than we could have ever immagined doing with the 100%.
A priest gave a sermon about giving, and his point was that when you give to God God will give to you far more than you gave to Him.
No matter how much we think we give to God He will always outgive us, and give more to us than we gave to Him.

Don't go to church so I don't tithe. But I do tend to do attend a lot of charitable events- even if they all involve food and alcohol

Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me But you say, 'How have we robbed you?'
In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts. Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts. Malachi 3

I would never tithe. Especially to the Catholic Church that takes your money and puts it who knows where. When I donate to the local church I ask if there is anything in particular the church needs. Flowers, candles, etc and buy that for them so I know my money is going to my particular church parish.

Yes, but nowhere near 10%. Just the minimum to get the Catholic school in parish tuition discount.

Damn! I thought I was the only one who did this. However, I do contribute a generous sum to the beer booth at the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Parish Fair.

So are you saying you tithe to give it back to God, or doing it because you think you'll get more for yourself by doing so?

I'm in no way telling you that you're wrong in your thinking but I have a question. Do you think that maybe all of your life is in order because you have worked hard, went to school, and been responsible with your finances?? I'm not saying that god has not done these things for you but you seem to be just saying that god has just magically done this for you because you pay your tithes.

You obviously have taken the necessary steps to make your life better. Maybe that could be the reason everything is going great??

That's a very good question, and for me it is by the grace of God that I worked hard, went to school, and have the knowledge to be wise with my finances. I could have succumbed to the financial temptations that many other people have fallen into, but God helped me be patient.

For me, I try to put God first, then all things will fall into place. Whoever created me should be first, and I believe that is God. By trying to put God first in my life, I am placing what is most important first. If I get the most important in the correct order, then I have a good chance to get the second, third, etc.

Anyone who gives generously is indirectly putting God first, and God will help them get their priorities in order whether they believe in God or not. God will be patient with them, and one day maybe they will realize He truly exists.

People who are generous are the happiest, joyous, and most peaceful people I know. There are many people in the world with no food. If you gave $20 of food to someone, and you knew they would be able to eat today because you gave, how peaceful would you feel? It's a feeling of peace no drug can give. Many people do not believe they can give or that it will make a difference, but it would make a difference for someone, and knowing that is very fulfilling. It truly is better to give than to receive. Tithing is 10%, but $20 is a good start for the person who is not at that level.
Giving more than 10% one enters into the area of almsgiving, and giving alms covers mutitudes of sins, whether one believes in God or not.

I don't give 10% of my earnings, but I do always try to put something in the offering plate when I do go to church.

Yes I tith the first 10% before taxes are taken out. I believe all my money belongs to God not just what I tith. And no I don't beleive I will go to hell if I don't tith.

You might want to just give 10% after tax and use the extra for some English courses and a bottle of valium, bro.
