Mine varies wildly. Never less than 1000. The wife likes to have a big cushion. And with interest rates so low, I don't complain. We do get interest on checking, like .3%

FWIW, looking at the reciepts is weird.

That's me, except that my wife is oblivious. She writes checks for everything. Her 15th Fossil Watch is due from UPS today. Can't have too many watches. Never know when one will go out of style.

bank checking < 500 unless I have a wire transfer to trading acct coming up then it can be a larger amount for a few minutes/hours.
credit union checking @ 1000 to pay utilities, monthly credit card bill (mostly gas and groceries), misc stuff.
I stopped using ATMs a couple of years ago. There was a rash of identity thefts at local ATMs in this area. I keep $300-500 in my wallet. Sometimes more in my sock...no kidding! I also never hand my credit card to a waiter for a restaurant check. Use cash. Some waiters in this area were electronically stealing CC numbers and selling them to identity theives. Same with bartenders. I have been shopping at the same Publix since 83 and know most every employee...they have proven trustworthy. Never toss CC receipts into the garbage. I shred every piece of paper with our personal info on it before it goes into garbage. Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.

I'm the exact opposite of you Rivers, I almost never use cash. It doesn't bother me because 1) my cc has a $1000 limit, and my checking acct rarely exceeds $200, and 2) the ability to monitor both of them in real-time online.

FWIW - a friend of mine took over a trust department at a local bank after Katrina and was shocked that many of the high net worth depositors had over 1 million in their checking accounts earning less than 1% interest. Many had been this way for years.

I've got a friend who does something similar. He says it's amazing how many of these people who were born into money have absolutely no money management skills and no concept of the idea that you must preserve the principle no matter what. People calling up furious because they want a bigger distribution so they can buy their third boat.
I guess if there was always enough money to do whatever you want, you never had to worry about it.

Sorry, I meant why not combine savings 2 and 3.
Savings 2 is rent house money. try to segregate that from my general savings.

I think that it could have been insured.

1 cent. Every payday I deposit money into one account that covers all my monthly bills, which are auto drafted. I put some into a Money Market Account. The rest I withdraw as cash - leaving one cent in my checking account.

About 50k. Been reading this section of the board for months seeing if there was something I should do with it rather than letting it sit in my savings... still haven't come up with anything. Any suggestions? Seriously.

Little over 40k cause I get 4% interest on my money for the first 25k. That is because of direct deposit and e-statement.
