I really do feel bad for these people who attend unaccredited or online law schools and are on their fourth or fifth time taking the bar.

At the same, wouldn't getting rejected from every real law school you applied to give you an inkling that maybe you shouldn't be a lawyer?

I'm always amazed that there are actually folks out there, who really want to be lawyers that bad.

That was LSU's policy not too many years ago.

Those of you thinking of becoming lawyers, know this -- I'm just now getting ready to leave the office.

Thank GOD no. I'm actually west of you guys, so the post was a little disingenuous. But I've heard if you want to work in New York you can expect to be at the office until 11 o'clock on a pretty regular basis.

F that.

I don't care what sort of limo service and fancy takeout meals you provide. It doesn't make up for making one work till 11:00+ on a regular basis.

Most of my classmates from law school ended up at big NYC firms (for obvious reasons). A close friend who works for Cravath was in town not too long ago and we were talking about hours.

Average day (M-F): 10am - 1am, lunch and dinner provided by firm.

Plus, she always works at least one full day on the weekend.

What's the point? She might as well be in prison, except with better food and nicer stuff.

What is that, about 85 hours per week? Let's say she makes $150K/yr. With the hours she works, she makes about $34/hour.

Not worth it IMO.

She makes more than that. Well, for now, anyway. Starting salaries at those big firms are around $165K with around a $30K bonus.

Edited to say that I agree with you that the hours suck.

Yeah, I'd guess she makes double that with bonus. I agree that it's not worth it, though. I think people who buy into that lifestyle place a very high emphasis on the prestige factor.

Okay...let's say she makes $300K/yr, working 85 hours/week. That's still about $68/hr., which isn't bad obviously.

If I could make $68/hr working 40 hrs/wk (which totals around $140K), I'd take that over the life-draining hours she's working.

Money is replacable, and you can always make more of it. Time is not, and once it's gone, it's gone.

(Kind of cheesy but true)

Plus don't forget that $300K in New York is probably about equal to $200K in Baton Rouge.

Although New York does have just a little bit more going on than BR.

If you're working those hours, kind of irrelevant though. FWIW I would put up with that for 4 years to have Cravath on the resume. Big4 auditors work their staff accountants like dogs too (not to that extent, but they might get paid half that amount), but that experience is universally respected.
