The vibe seemed more sales than fiduciary money management.

Exactly what I experienced too. Thus the question.

The term life insurance isn’t bad if that fits your timeline but I agree. I’d rather just do FXAIX and other funds on my own without paying them to manage it.

From what I've read, it's terrible. This Reddit thread essentially says their internship is just to bring in family members.

I'm only a year or so out of college but it's not something I would have done over a proper Investment job.

Northwestern sounds like they recruit people from lesser ranked schools to try and sell their products.

I don’t know if I am too late but I did this internship for a summer in order to get 1 credit hour. This was 10 years ago. But basically they get you registered immediately to sell Life insurance since that’s the easiest and most cost effective for them. Selling just life insurance to people sucks arse. No one is going to buy from a kid that can’t even sell things that require a series 7.

With all that said I did learn quite a bit. Mostly that I didn’t want to sell insurance.

Yeah the Reddit threads on NWM are absolutely brutal. I wonder if there’s even another side of the story.

What I don’t understand about NWM and the other companies, is their products are generally still expensive and there’s ton of similar products that can be price shopped. Most reasonable people are going to meet with someone and do a quick google search and find that out.

As a salesperson you also have to know this….

20 years ago you could play ignorant and honestly not know if you worked there if your product was expensive, even if it was still great.

So to pitch a sale to your friends and family for something that is overpriced? That’s a hard sale for anyone with reasonable conscience especially someone like an intern.
