We have the tempurpedic cloud, I think we paid aroudn 2k for the king size version last year. We love it.

FYI: these beds are supposed to last longer than regular spring mattresses so maybe that could help you justify spending more on it.

For sleeping on or hiding your money under?

Tempur Pedic = yay or nay
i bought one a few years ago and returned it before the 90 or 120 day limit. me and the ol' lady both kept getting hot (bought it in the summer to make sure b/c i read reviews about the heat). i also don't like that the foam takes so long to recover. if you are a person that rolls or moves a lot in your sleep, you may not like it. i would roll over and then fall back into the body cavity.
the good thing is that the return policy is legit. i just called them and told them i didn't like it and they sent someone to come pick it up.
I ended up buying a restonic and will never look back. my tempurpedic was around $4k and the restonic was closer to $1200-1500.

sleep innovations on Amazon. I paid ~$700 for a king size memory foam and absolutely love it. the reviews on there are insanely good. Sent right to my front door and took about a day or so for it to be useable. I would buy another one in a heart beat if I needed to.

I like the 2-3 inch thick mattress pads over a regular mattress. The best is a down covering that goes over a tempur pedic like material pad. Think it was about $300 bucks.

There are different types of foam, one has to read up on it before purchase, one form definitely retains heat, the others not so much.

We got either a Serta or Simmons king with a new form of foam construction they came out with about 3-years ago (b/c you are a good guy I actually pulled the bedding off the foot end of the mattress, which weighs about 450 f'n pounds for real, and the label must be at the other end, f that and I don't know where the manual is) top of the line foam which is very dense. This thing is so heavy my wife, who works out/lifts weights, has to ask for help every time the sheets are changed. It is very comfortable, but is really a little softer than I prefer, and this was after trying ~ 15 mattresses over 5-hours and talking them down from $4400 to $3600 with "free" delivery. It does not sleep "hot" at all.
Since you are in an apt Flask's suggestion is a good one, get a firm to x-firm heavy coil mattress/box springs that you like and add a good dense foam top and you would be set and it would be much less hassle for you or the movers to get in/out in the future, and you would save money. Typically Memorial Day is an excellent weekend to buy with a lot of deals available. I am not kidding about the mattress weight, that thing is unreal heavy.
My dad has an off brand king foam and loves it, he paid ~ 2300 if I recall correctly and has had it about 5-years.
PS - I don't like Sleep Numbers at all, especially the firm settings and I like firm mattresses in general.

We got a Serta memory foam mattress a few years ago. The problem I have is that the top layer has separated from the bottom on one side of the bed. Serta wants to charge us ~$90 just to look at it so that they possibly could honor their warranty. If you have any stains what so ever, the warranty is void. The top is solid white and there is no way you wouldn't have staining. We didn't know until they told us about a mattress cover. When we get a new bedroom set, I will probably look around at other manufacturers. As far as comfort, it is great.

Those waterproof types can come in handy, especially with pets that get on the bed. I thought the sales guy was just leading us on to begin with but it made sense.
