You do realize that Drew Brees had the greatest statistical five year run of any quaterback in the history of football right? I'm not a Saints fan, that's just fact.
Eh. Yardage and completion percentage-wise he's been great. But his QB rating hasn't always been at an all-time level.
He's been awesome, but I'm not gonna say he's had the best five year run in the history of the game.

Just read some more in the thread, didn't realize we were only talking one year and not really considering the body of work.
Ok, yeah, Rodgers was better this year if you look at that. And if we are talking going forward, I'd take Rodgers too. But its hard to say right now, currently Rodgers is better. Brees' 09 season isn't that long ago.

I'm not a big fan of QB rating.

You said you want Rodgers over Brees going forward and I can see where age could be a factor, but what about just next year? Still Rodgers?

This is hard for me
I've been pushing Rodgers as an elite qb for a while and most people disagreed. Now after this playoff run the whole wolds all over him. I almost feel bad for Brees', like he's going to be the forgotten man outside of this board in the "best qb in the league" debate. I have a ton if respect for Brees'.
I'd probably take 1. Brady 2. Brees 3. Rodgers 4. Manning in that order just for next year.

If i was picking a QB for my team next year i would have to go with Rodgers... just my opinion

Dude, putting up huge numbers doesn't make it the greatest statistical run ever. Brees makes a lot of big plays, but with that comes mistakes. Yeah, he threw a lot of INTs this year, but he also threw 18 and 17 INTs in 2 of the previous three seasons as well. That cannot be ignored.
Rodgers and Brees are essentially equal as QBs at passing. Rodgers protects the ball better and gives you a legit threat to rush the ball.

you really don't think having a significant MCL injury for the majority of this season effected his accuracy #s at all this season? Ok awesome.
Injuries are part of the game, and you have no way of knowing the extent to which Brees' injuries affected his game, same with Rodgers.

I'm being a homer and you're completely unbiased? Shut up
You are acting like a little Breesus fanboy who gets butthurt when someone has a different opinion.

Let's see if it was a fluke first before dropping him in rankings. How about that? No that's crazy talk.
So you'd rather ignore an entire current season of data when arguing who is CURRENTLY better in favor of past success? Yep, zero bias there.
Why would you prefer Brees over Rodgers to lead your team for an entire season? What does he do that stands out that Aaron doesn't?

Rodgers is probably not going to have the type of season next year he had this year. Winning a Super Bowl is hard to replicate. Teams will study the Packers more this offseason. The Saints offense had to adjust earlier this season when teams started figuring them out early on.

He may not have the same team success, but I don't think his individual success will fall. He actually had a better statistical season last year than this year. The main concern with Rodgers is health. He seems a little more frail than some of the other top QBs.

So you cometely ignore the previous year when talking about current QB's? In 08 Brady wasnt the best QB even though he though 50 td's and 4 int's the year before?
Brees was better last year, and Rodgers was better this year.

the '09 saints would have skullfricked the '10 packers. last time we played was in 08 and we blew them out.

I'm not completely ignoring anything. Drew Brees puts up great numbers and is a great leader, but I think his enormous yardage and TD numbers mask the fact that he throws a lot of INTs. They are both great passers; it is truly splitting hairs when comparing how they throw the ball. I think you have to look at the added element of Rodgers running the ball. Over the last three years, Rodgers has gained 879 yards and scored 13 TDs; Drew Brees has gained 29 yards and scored 2 TDs.
Last three years:
Drew Brees:
103 total TDs, 56 total turnovers, 68% completions, 298ypg, 98 QB rating
Aaron Rodgers:
99 total TDs, 39 total turnovers, 65% completions, 263ypg, 99 QB rating
They are pretty even in just about every category outside of turnovers and yards, and I think we can all agree that turnovers are a more crucial stat than total yards. If you want to pick Brees because of some intangible factor, that's fine, but I'm taking Rodgers. They are 3 and 4 in the league respectively right now regardless of which is better.

How is this remotely relevant? Clay Matthews, for instance, was still at USC in 2008.

But look at it by individual seasons and Brees wins two to one. His int total this year makes him look bad overall. And when you throw that much, your going to have INT's. I'm not excusing the int's, I just think that was partly a product of the system and having to throw it 50 times on certain occasions.
And I agree, the running factor is a nice bonus.

+1. No way does that make any sense.

You're right, two of those three seasons Brees was better. However, I think that Brees at 32 years old has peaked as a QB. I don't think he'll start throwing 20+ INTs a season, but I think he has reached his full potential as a QB while Rodgers just completed his third full season as a starter.
I am not trying to sound like a Brees hater. My original comment of Rodgers > Brees, though I believe it, was harmless. I am a Drew Brees fan and get a lot of enjoyment out of watching him play the game.

If the game is on the line, I'd take Brees over Rodgers any day. Rodgers' stock is high right now, but it will come down to Earth next season when he struggles again like he did a lot this year, including the game before the Super Bowl. FWIW, I have been a big fan of Rodgers and I think he is a top 5 QB in the league right now.

Thought you might be interested to see the poll on espn.com's homepage. No, I am not linking it.
ETA: The poll question is which of the last 5 Super Bowl champions is the best?

'06 Colts
'07 Giants
'08 Steelers
'09 Saints
'10 Packers
IDK, '07 Giants are probably the worst.
