As for the field, you wonder why guys don't want to come here and play? Check this shite out:

Meh, Quail Hollow is ahead of TPC in some of those categories, and they get a stellar field, including Tiger and Phil, every year. I think the reason this course is disliked is because it's too gimmicky. Little pot bunkers in the middle of the fairway on multiple holes and other quirks tend to piss these guys off. I also think you can tell how fair a course plays by the leaderboard. The cream rises to the top usually, but the TPC has had several no names win because chance comes into play too often. I knew we were fricked as far as field goes when the players started bitching about the course the first year of the tourney.

this is true, but that is a VERY respected golf course and these guys do like to be tested by tough golf....just not with the bunkers in the middle of the fairway 7300 yard kind of way...

The question:

Is 17th island hole at the Players a gimmicky or challenging hole?

I'll be heading out today in a couple of hours to watch the first round. Daly tees off around noon, and I plan on following him most of the day. Boss hooked us up with Champions Club passes as well.

Id say a little of both, but there's nothing wrong with a good island green as you see those on courses all over the world

Gimmicky. It's a huge green and 130 yards long. Not saying this is a bad design though because a good shot still gets rewarded. You can hit good shots at TPC Louisiana that not only don't get rewarded, they get severly penalized.

Great round by Duval today...bogey free 68. Looking forward to watching him tomorrow.

I wouldn't want to play there either. This is indicative of bad design IMO when good and great shots get punished.

Watched Bubba Watson in Pro-Am yesterday. He was in greenside bunker on 2. He hit his shot and left it in the bunker again. As his pro-am partners were skulling it around the green he was picking rocks out of bunker with his wedge. He must have picked 30 good sized rocks out and threw them in the woods. He wasn't too happy about the conditions. Oh and Poulter bailed to go to the Magic's playoffs games.

I always thought the TPC courses were designed for PGA events? What happen with this course? Did Katrina ruin the layout?

I know that trap and there's ALWAYS rocks in it. I am starting to believe they buy sand with rocks on purpose

That's not good to hear. It's one thing if the design is shitty, but they should at least have the course in ideal shape when the only important event all year played on the course is in town.

I know someone who caddied in the pro-am yesterday, and he told me there were several greens in less than ideal shape as well.

He didn't like the consistency of that bunker at all. Said it was like a sandbox.

Ok, if you're going to say that, you need to tell us how you know this.

No, Pete Dye did. Actually, Katrina probably made it more playable by getting rid of some trees that were strategically left in play.
