Athletes are compensated based on the revenue they create for the owners.
Additionally think of all the business and jobs that sports help......plane tickets, hotel rooms, taxi rides, full bars and liquor sales, grocery store sales for chips and party food, the trickle down goes on and on.
Some people have a hard time seeing the big picture. I had this same discussion once with a girl on Facebook and she tried to tell me she was sure bars and restaurants would still do the same business and have the same number of jobs if sports didn't exist

Politicians are more overpaid than professional athletes.

Not really sure how we can argue they're overpaid, considering the owners still seem willing to pay them.
