Hank Gathers.

I have always remembered the death of Hank Gathers, primarily because it occurred on the court during a game.

Yeah during an event also adds a lot of significance to it. Part of why Earnhardt was so huge. Hank gathers is a big one to me.

Closer they were to their prime, the bigger it is as to that person
Or conversely, potential unfulfilled, life not lived. To an athlete dying young, Len Bias, Hank Gathers, etc.

Who the hell is downvoting the Munich Air Disaster as a tragedy? I'm a 'pool fan and I know it was awful.

Kobe was one of the greatest to ever play his sport, and one of the most recognizable athletes in the last 20 years, dying only a few years after his retirement.
He’s #1 by a wide margin

Mickey Mantle was THE childhood idol for a couple generations.
What’s up with calling him a drunk? Casting stones from a glass house, in reference to Bryant, eh?
You millennials are hilariously short-sighted.

I'll be 56 years old tomorrow and it's the biggest of my lifetime.

This is easily the biggest in my lifetime- 38yo.
The daughter aspect makes it infinitely worse.
I remember Payne Stewart and dale earnhardt, and no disrespect to either of them, this is bigger.

Though not as sudden a shock, Lou Gehrig.

I mean Kobe was retired. If you really want to rank deaths, I would put guys who died that were still active ahead of this one.

Lou Gehrig was 4 years younger than Kobe at the time of his death and would have still been a productive player had he not had ALS.

That is a factor but not dispositive. Youth is a big factor.

Growing up in NE Ohio, Steve Olin and Tim Crews was pretty big.

Are you that slow? Everyone was surprised Mantle lived that long. Even Mantle. No one on the planet saw this coming.

Suddenness also a huge factor in the bigness.
Extent to which the person transcended his sport is also a big part of it.
