quote:Seating capacity is listed as 18,545. So far this season they are averaging 13,745 people per game (74.1% of capacity). Last year the average attenance was 14,626 (78.9%). Hawks have been over 80% every year since the 2006-2007 season.
How is the attendance for the Thrashers?
Even during the Thrashers playoff run a few years back avg attenance was only 80-something percent of capacity, with a few rare sellouts.
As for teams moving out of Canada, that trend was forced because, as someone said, the devaluation of the Canadian dollar. Teams were forced to pay all salaries in American dollars, but revenues were made in Canadian dollars. At that point the exchange rate was something like $8 Canadian = $5 US. So a payroll of $100MM US, you would have to have brought in $106MM Canadian to have just broken even on payroll.

Capitals have sold out every game this season and are one of the best fanbases in the league.

Thrashers come in at 28th. LOL at the post above.
18,277 is capacity by the way. And while the Caps have one of the best fanbases in the league, I say that because they are loud as shite and there are a ton of diehards, but there are also a ton of front runners that have jumped onto the Ovechkin bandwagon but they bring the nosie at Verizon.

I hope they end up in the post season as the 8 seed so caps fans can over run that city. Ticket should be cheap as frick for lack of a demand

The old knock on DC is that there were no Caps fans, just hockey fans. I certainly lived up to that. I rooted for the Caps, still do, but not as much as I pull for the Flames.
Comparing the NHL and NBA attendance as % of capacity numbers is fun. (NHL/NBA)
100%+ 11/4
90%+ 19/15
80%+ 23/23
Which league is struggling again? Though the Coyotes are dead. Wow.

The one that nobody wants to watch on TV.

See, and that's because the commish is a moron who can't negotiate a TV contract. But its not like the TV ratings for the NBA are wonderful, though certainly better than hockey's.
The point is, though. Hockey has plenty of support at the grassroots level. People actually show up to games. The NHL is not at the top of the sports heap, but the idea that it is struggling for its life is not true.
And, do we get to add Canadian TV? Because then the numbers change.

the old captial center used to rock that place was a zoo, i remember going with my dad and people getting shite canned, smoking cigs in the upper deck and just fighting 24/7 and it was even worse when the pens/flyers came to town. Diehards should remember it well.
Now with the team being better than ever, its the new hot ticket in town and brings in a new kind of fan. I hate those douches who wear like a button up shirt under a jersey.
Posted on 2/10/10 at 4:11 pm to StraightCashHomey21
The Cap Center was like a cave with that black roof. But I do remember how crazy the place got for Flyers games, especially.

I'm not an NHL fan, but it seems to me they should contract, get rid of the teams in the Sunbelt (Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, Phoenix, Carolina) and center the league around the NE, Upper Midwest and Canada where people are most passionate about hockey.
