I like this trade. I think our SP depth will work itself out for this year. We got a really good closer who's cheap and will be around for 5 years. And we still have a lot of solid arms in the farm system (I have really high hopes for Martes and Musgrove). VV and Appel have upside but they aren't can't miss aces by any means. Our bullpen gets an inning deeper which is great

Wow just saw the updated trade. We gave up a LOT. I will say VV didn't seem to mesh with whatever we wanted him to be as a big league, albeit he is still very young. Obie was on the outside anyway you slice it. I think a lot of us still held out hope for Appel but we probably value him more than others at this point. I was also intrigued with Eshelman as he seemed to be similar to a McHugh type.
If Giles is a legit closer all is good its the price of doing business. If he isn't this trade will haunt us down the road.

I feel like the Dodgers are going to end up with Cueto. Just a hunch.

They way you wrote that out, doesn't seem like a lot.
VV - Didn't have what the organization thought mesh well.
Obie - Burned bridges
Appel - Bust
Eshelman - unknown commodity, unproven
So where is the "ALOT?"
At this point Giles gives Houston what they need on the back end of the bullpen. Seriously what cost the Astros an ALCS appearance?
Fwiw, if Giles continues to improve, because he is young and has plenty of time to develop even more, I like the hell out of his trade. VV lacks movement on his FB. Obie was never going to make it into the rotation. Appel? If he were going to make it to the majors, he would have been shelled and there would have been so many stories in the media about Bryant vs. Appel pick. We have finally gotten away from negative media attention. Why invite it back?
I think it's hard to give up these guys because we pay so uch attention to them and watch them come up their entire careers. To be successful, you have to give a little to get back.
I love this trade.

My question is if they gave up all these you guys and prospects for this guy they could not have put up a similar package last year at the deadline for kimbrel? Appel, VV, Obie and someone else? Maybe not musgrove or martes but feliz or a hitter? We might have won a World Series if they pulled a deal off but instead we wait for the offseason to get a talented but unproven player.

Yeah good point. I guess I just don't feel like Giles is a proven commodity just yet. We gave up a AAAA arm and two of our top 5 prospects in VV and Appel so I would say that is a Lot. If Giles does a solid job as a closer then I'm happy with the trade.

Don't question the authority or you'll get blackballed.

In case you haven't yet, check out this article. Probably the most accurate article I've ever seen come from TCB, IMO.

You questioned me on this.
And then you posted a Link that came to this conclusion...
I agree the article summed it all up nicely, I feel better about the deal now.

The Astros gave up a TON in this trade. A couple of those pitchers have ceilings as Top of Rotation MLB starting pitchers. But ceilings are ceilings, and there's real risk that none of them pan out. That's the Phillies' risk, and why they are receiving five players back in the deal, including two in Oberholtzer and Eshelman that figure to be "high-floor, low-ceiling" types.

...and when they start winning again everyone will be like "aw shucks, it's just Ryno playing a character blah blah he's so fuuny."
No. It's not funny and it's way past time to stop with the same BS thays been going on since we've started these threads way back when. At least tickfaw had the nerve to stay away and silently admit he was wrong. Ryno does nothing but throws shite on a wall and if something sticks, he let's everyone know he was right the whole time.
I understand this is a message board and people shouldn't hold grudges or ACTUALLY dislike someone over social media, but damn. When does it stop?

Cueto signed with the Giants. I wish we went after him.

Meh. ...and meh isn't worth $130M, IMO

Keith Law, who pulls zero punches in his analysis, posted an article that was fairly positive for the Astros as well. It made me a feel a bit better but we still gave up a ton.

Analyzing Ken Giles' impact on the Astros' bullpen
Having trouble pulling up in mobile without an account but works fine in pc mode.
Didn't realize he has the lowest career ERA in MLB history.
