What's the vibe on the current Astros ownership? Are they willing to shell out the money now that they have the foundation of really solid young talent?

I have faith they will start spending but also am not sold on Going after hamel's. Phillies want the farm

I don't want Hamels period. I just do not believe in the guy and don't think he would fit with this team regardless of the cost in prospects. He is not a 23million dollar pitcher.

We can do better.

Off topic, but any of yall ever sit in the Crawford boxes? Will be sitting there for the first time next Thursday against the Angels.

He's at 99 pitches before he starts the 8th. Not sure he finishes.

We will learn a lot about Hamels today at Wrigley. I think he's been very unhappy with the shitty way Philly has handled things with him. If he's still the winner we think he is, he'll show it this afternoon.

Hamels

HE DID IT!

Hamels needs Jake Marisnick in his life.

If we trade for Hamels, Philly needs to eat $ or we won't resign Kazmir, and I would like to resign Kazmir

We wouldn't make a deal for him without getting money back. I'd guess a minimum of $20 million.

Guy has a career era at around 3.20. Thats over 10 seasons. If he was sucking and getting rocked these last couple of years (like a verlander or something) then maybe I'd somewhat see your point. But he was a sub 2.5 era pitcher in over 200 IP and averaged almost a K per inning just last season. For comparison, Kazmir is having that type of year this season so far and this is his career year in every category other than Ks. A guy with Cole's kind of track record is an ace, easily, and should be paid in the $25 mill range per season, give or take a few.

Price has a 3.1 career era in around 8 seasons. Zimmerman is about a 3.25 in 7 or 8 seasons. If you think those guys are $25 mill per year pitchers, then Cole at $23 mill and with the Phillies probably having to pay for some of that makes him worth it. Hypothetically, if the Phils have to pay $3-5 mill per year of that which would make Cole a sub $20 mill per year pitcher for the next few years for whomever trades for him, then thats a bargain, IMO (speaking solely on the contract)

The issue is obviously which prospects you have to give up for him. Thats what makes the trade questionable. But, I'd give up Appel, Kemp, and 2 other prospects in the astros 10-15 rankings for him, easily. Appel is now seen as a 2 or 3 SP (maybe lower). We have other pitchers in the minors with that kind of projection. Kemp is blocked at 2B and we have better OF prospects than him. Guys in the 10-15 range (like what we gave up for Kazmir) are still years away and unknown to what they will contribute. I'd personally be OK with giving that up and getting Cole's proven track record for 3 years or so at $20 mill per year (presuming the Phils pay for some of it)

Cole with the no hitter while I am writing this.

quote:

He's 9th in WAR amongst active pitchers
6th in ERA+
4th in WHIP
8th in K/9

He's in the top 10 of active pitchers in any relevant stat.
