Honestly it’s like when I was a kid and it was always the 49ers, cowboys, and bills on the other side. Oddly familiar.

In the 70s, when I was kid, EVERY Super Bowl had at least one of these 4 teams:

-- Steelers
-- Dolphins
-- Cowboys
-- Vikings

And half of those Super Bowls, 2 of those 4 teams played each other:

IV Jan. 11, 1970 Kansas City - Minnesota
V Jan. 17, 1971 Baltimore - Dallas
VI Jan. 16, 1972 Dallas - Miami
VII Jan. 14, 1973 Miami - Washington
VIII Jan. 13, 1974 Miami - Minnesota
IX Jan. 12, 1975 Pittsburgh - Minnesota
X Jan. 18, 1976 Pittsburgh - Dallas
XI Jan. 9, 1977 Oakland - Minnesota
XII Jan. 15, 1978 Dallas - Denver
XIII Jan. 21, 1979 Pittsburgh - Dallas
XIV Jan. 20, 1980 Pittsburgh - Los Angeles

It can’t be overstated how important ownership and organizational structure are in the NFL.

For example, if the Browns or Dan Snyder Redskins had drafted Tom Brady, he never sniffs a Super Bowl prior to reaching free agency and leaving.

Having a bad coach or roster is a short term problem.

It isn't an issue.

What happens is a really good franchise like a Patriots or Eagles has a terrible year at the end of a string of high level success, but has the infrastructure and knowledge and familiarity to recognize the attributes that differentiate good quarterback prospects from great quarterback prospects.

They then take a high quality prospect at a good draft position, with a much better hit rate than a poorly operated franchise that wouldn't recognize championship attribute quarterbacks if they fell out of the fricking sky and landed on them.

Those teams then parlay a high quality prospect on a rookie deal, into the salary cap flexibility to surround them with the best veteran talent, as well as retaining their developing talent they might otherwise lose elsewhere.

The real challenges for successful franchises are usually from the middle on of their young QB's 2nd contract, when they are feeling the pinch and having to replace key cogs that become less and less affordable as they pay the quarterback.

You always hear about how the NFL has the most parity of any league

I don't recall ever hearing that.

The NBA has had 11 different teams appear in the Finals over the past 10 years, and the MLB has had 13 different teams make World Series appearances over the last 10 years.

From your graphic the NFL only has 9 different teams over that same span.

No Free Agency really shaped this Era...and to a lesser degree the 80s limited form.

But in the 70s, you nail a Draft class or two (Steelers, '74) and you were set for life and so were the Coaches.
