It's business. Their audience has changed. In general white men have abandoned them so they must appeal those who watch live tv.

True, and I think they also have many hosts/personalities who want to talk about news and politics.
Of course it's business. And it's bad business when your money comes from eyeballs on the network, but all you do is turn away more and more eyeballs from your network because you commit yourself as a sports network to NOT talk about sports.
The ratings show it. If ESPN thinks their majority of viewers want to see the things they continue to speak about, then someone high up should be fired.

Most of the people who care about "sports only" are working during the day. They aren't on our couch during those hours to give them views.
To be fair, I work full time and the two times I mentioned in the OP were 10:00 in the morning on Masters Sunday and 4:30 pm on a Monday.

Can anyone explain to me how a sports event getting canceled would not get covered by ESPN like that’s exactly what ESPN is there for
This situation is directly effecting sports, it would be insane to expect ESPN not to mention it or discuss it
This is so. Bruce Jenner social commentary, not so. ESPN unfortunately believes one is just the extension of the other.

I loved PTI and would watch it day of for decades. Now I’ll occasionally just listen to it as a podcast while doing laundry. Mike is always angry and shoehorns race into convos. Tony is a SJW but not to the extreme like his cohort.

I’m sure I’m wrong, but a lot of times it feels like Tony doesn’t really believe the shite he says and literally is only saying it to pander to Wilbon. Plus he knows just to keep his mouth shut on certain issues and lets Wilbon do all the talking and just defers for whatever political point he makes in order to not upset his gravy train.

Not necessarily. Different demos are more enticed by content and their commercials. Minority populations are much more likely these days to buy and stay loyal to products with heavy commercial rotation.

I turn on ESPN if there is a specific sporting event I want to watch now. That's it.

But ESPN isn't making money on how well its advertisers do (at least directly), right? Advertisers pay for ad space/time....for viewers. And I guess my point is that if you're catering to the minority, while ignoring the vast majority of your viewers, then you are all but guaranteeing fewer viewers for your advertisers. I may be explaining that poorly, but it makes sense in my head.
By definition, "minorities" are smaller in number than the majority. So if you cater only to that demographic, then you will lose viewers from the majority. And I'd imagine advertising is mostly a numbers game, and that seems like a bad strategy because you're getting smaller numbers.

ESPN is basically political commentary without tucker Carlson. Takes are awful too.

I watch it only for ballgames I want to see, nothing else.
