High School Referee shortage in LA

I heard a story about this in several states. Michigan for example, was another.

Like I said, it's pretty much nationwide.

I tried it once and hated it.

Maybe if I started out officiating high school, I would have had a better experience. However, I started out officiating 7 and 8 year olds. The way I was treated by the parents vs. the amount I was paid wasn't at all worth it. I'm not going to spend my weeknights being heckled and insulted for shite pay.

I do soccer as well but I'm considering not returning. It has nothing to do with covid, it just started taking over my evenings. It's mostly my fault because I made myself available on the schedule so much, but with the shortage I was getting so many games I kind of got burnt out. I was already considering stopping before the shutdown.

The bitching by coaches and parents don't really bother me in a one off situation, but when you work games 5 nights a week and have to hear it over and over it just starts to get old.

And then they turn around and complain about us only sending 2 refs to their games. Well no shite, y'all run off 95% of our new people every year.

It's extremely hard to get people to come back for their 3rd year.

We just got a massive raise in an attempt to retain refs.

If parents and coaches would just chill the frick out, you'd probably be able to get refs for free at these really young leagues. Hell, I'd officiate for free because these rec leagues are really good for the community.

I had a mother just lay into me for an entire game one time. I was the only official at a 7 year old flag football game. Of course, my eye was on the ball and the play so I missed something that happened behind me. I made the decision to talk to her after the game about it because it was ridiculous, even though I should have just left the field immediately. Parents and coaches also need to realize that youth/rec league officials aren't going to be super polished like what you see on NFL Sundays. We are going to miss things and mess things up.

I'd probably have a better time handling the abuse at high school because you part of a bigger crew and there are cops. I dunno...maybe I'll apply to high school for 2021 and just try to bypass the rec leagues.

High School is very enjoyable. Worst age is the first year kids are playing and the last year before HS..... I never spent much time at either of those levels. but... coaches that don't know the rules and or parents... make it tough... HS coaches respect professionalism.

you want to know what the biggest problem in baton rouge is?

the assignment secretary . get rid of him and your numbers will come back up

I don't care what level or sport it is... 1/3 of the people are happy with assignments 1/3 don't care and 1/3 are upset. That's been with every sport I've been involved with and many different assigners. They are also the first ones to get the brunt when something goes wrong.

Funny you say that.

I do a lot of sports photography, and I can tell you that a lot of HS coaches act like complete assholes to the refs regardless of the refs conduct. That is just from my observations.

I have never had a bad experience with a HS coach.

Oh shite. You guys are the worst ones out there. Peach State is ten times better.

I kid, I kid.

I know you're kidding because Etowah Valley got multiple finals crews in their first year as an association. GFOA out of Atlanta is hands down the worst. Amazingly enough, GSOA out of Atlanta is the worst soccer officials association too. Shocking, I know...

That was your first mistake. In all seriousness, NEVER EVER engage with a spectator. In fact, ignore them completely, unless they get personal, then toss their arse right on out to the highway.

Georgia Soccer put a rule in 2 years ago giving referees full authority to toss a spectator for complaining about any decision they made. Doesn't matter how friendly or angry they got, if they questioned it, they were gone. I've called the cops on multiple occasions to deal with unruly spectators. I tell them they can leave on their own or in handcuffs and I don't care which.

I'm w/GOAA out of Smyrna. I was slated to call Parkview-Mill Creek in the Corky Kell(would of been 3 years IAR having a game in it) but 1 kid for MC popped positive on Tuesday night and nobody would step forward to play Parkview so the game got banged. I had Buford-Milton last year and N.Gwinnett-Brookwood in '18 at Mercedes-benz. I've gone to the 2nd rd.of the playoffs the last 2 years; aiming for at least a quarter-final this season if all things stay like they are. I'm a deep judge. 80/20 SJ/FJ. I will run some BJ when we run 7-man but normally I'm a SJ 80% of the time. 13th year doing baseball. Going on 19 for baseball. I absolutely love being under Friday night lights!

Problem is you can't really just step into high school - you need to work through the lower levels to figure out what you're doing.

You should try to start with kids around 11-12 years old. At that point, most of the kids at least know how the game is supposed to go and they aren't yet at the age where their parents are trying to get scholarships signed. After a full season or two, you'd easily be ready for HS. HS is actually a lot easier to officiate than the lower levels. The kids by that time understand how to play the game and the plays are made where they are supposed to most of the time. Also, HS coaches are no where near as bad as travel ball coaches and they usually have a little control over their parents.
