They go on strike if they do not get guaranteed contracts. The NFL is the wealthiest professional sports league in the US.
So, logically, it didn't become the wealthiest league because the owners are poor negotiators and business men? So, any negotiation will be going against the best of the best.

I heard too many stories of the scabs getting a foothold in the league after 87... guys like Fourcade...
The blacklist for those scabs should have been stronger... coaches and GMs hurt the strike cause by signing some afterwards

Baseball is not dying, its just become ultra localised and territorial. These regional tv deals are huge, especially in areas with heavy spanish speaking populations like Southern Cal. Baseball also plays double the games any other league does which means twice the game revenue and twice the TV time.
The NBA is actually probably still the 3rd or 4th most popular sport(including college football) but the rosters are only 12 man, play 82 games, and most of all ESPN massivley over paid for their rights when they were buying up almost every major sports property a couple years ago.
The salary cap jump is directly related to ESPNs stupidity, the players should basically be getting checks from ESPN because they are the ones that pumped all the new money into the salaries. This is also one of the major reasons ESPN is hemmoraging employees and money… they overpaid for almost every property they broadcast when FOX Sports 1 came along to keep them from getting any of the good packages.
