Holy God, how can a helmet come apart?!?
Not many things can withstand the force of a car traveling 200+ MPH slamming into a protection wall....
Just a horrible accident, anyway you look at it..

Which is the front of the car? Left?
Looks like his head is just leaning forward with his visor up?

yea the left side is the front. i was thinking the right side was the front.

I think that the "piece of helmet" is actually just some debris in the background, If his helmet had come apart like that, You wouldn't see anything in that pic of him getting on the helicopter. That would be WAAAAAY more graphic.
ETA:Still no in car through the wreck, but chances are, if any of the lost limb reports are true, you won't want to see it. At least I wouldn't.

i think i could watch it if its just an arm flying off or something. as long as there's no audio...

Honestly, I hope they never release it out of respect for his family. In fact, they should have already destroyed the footage.

yea i think that would be the right thing to do as well. i was just curious if they did.

Me too. I searched the internet for it, then realized that I probably didn't want to see it anyways. I don't know how any of those guys can climb in the cockpit ever again. I know it's their job, but for guys like Kanaan and Franchitti, is it worth it anymore? Put your life on the line for a trophy? No thanks.

Looks like the roll bar is gone, and the front top of his helmet is scraped badly. His head must have taken a brutal blow.

Wow. What a tragic wreck.
Sorry to hear about this. I can't think of any way to prevent this again other than the obvious of slowing them down.

Two of my ortho guys who performed my reconstruction surgeries are in the Ortho Indy out of Methodist...they work with the IRL.
Dr. Webber (best foot specialist in the nation) told me about Alex Zanardi's gruesome injuries (both his legs were ripped off of his body)...Dr. Webber is at the track for the races...he told me some of the things he sees in the cars after an accident is pretty rough...I am sure Dan Weldon's injuries were worse then Zanardi's.
They have the best first medical team in car racing...they travel the circuit with the IRL.

I don't think Weldon had the best of years points wise, as I know up until Indy he was looking for a ride after it. I think he was in several cars this year.
This was only his third race to run this year...he was set to drive Andretti's GoDaddy.com #7 next season.

if I was a driver I would have said frick that let's finish
Franchitti was points leader...Power was the the only guy within reach and had wrecked out.
No reason to continue the race IMO.

Classy move to end the race right there, I mean how could they possibly even entertain the idea of finishing the race.
Terrible for his family to have witnessed that, especially his little boys. Damn.
